If not already done, consider joining the Series One Club as there are usually one or two for sale and the forum is a good source of information on parts suppliers, many of which are club members themselves who manufacture some excellent quality parts. 80in Land Rovers are a nice thing but bloody awful to drive long distance on todays roads. if you are buying something which needs a complete rebuild then whatever budget you have you will almost certainly exceed. good luck in your hunt. |

Def9 is totally right they are fun weekend run abouts, but fabulously unreliable and awful for long journeys (ran one as only car for 3 years - first car in fact so long time ago). Remember those fuel pump membranes (made of tissue paper), the endlessly cracking exhaust manifold and the heater which produced an asthmatic dribble of warm air. Still miss it now as they are brilliant to drive. Sold it back then for about 4 grand, nowadays the prices are bonkers but more value than a rebuilt “new” defender from JLR.
If you do get one be prepared for lots of chat at petrol stations and frequent pull over chats from other owners. Would even get stopped by plod for a chat (Landy fan copper near Bath in the late 80s!) Go as original as you can, with one that’s been used frequently as loads of it is rubber which loves to perish without use. If you don’t like it I’ll buy it for a realistic 80s price if you like #wishistillhadmine 2.4TDCI 90 - everyday brilliance S3 V8 Lightweight - in the garage being ignored #newchassistime S3 lightweight - 2nd car 24V fire risk with a full tilt and the windscreen down S1 80" - first car fun - 75mph in neutral downhill once #wobblesallround |

I decided last year that I too wanted a series 1, I found an 86” locally that drove but wasn’t very original , had a 2.25 fitted . I paid a lot , probably more than I should’ve but I don’t really have any regrets as it puts an even bigger smile on my face than the Defender . The body work is a project in itself . There are plenty about and some are reasonably priced if you’re patient , don’t rush it and be prepared to travel !
I actually find it fairly comfortable and the ride reasonably soft if not rather vague . My plan was to have a couple of summers of fun and then possibly sell it on or if I win the lottery a complete restoration . If you’re still looking in the autumn I may be prepared to part with it to buy a series 3 ! Click image to enlarge https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

I'm sorry but I cannot agree with this statement! I have run both 80" and 86" vehicles as my main transport at times and they are every bit as reliable as my 2.4 110, and generally much easier to repair. If the heater isn't hot there's a fault, usually they'll suppress hair growth on the passenger's legs while the driver freezes. I completely agree that they are unsuitable for 'normal' use in today's traffic, though, and come from a time when comfort and ergonomics simply weren't considered. I used to do many long journeys in my 80" when in my late teens and early twenties (Oxford to Bournemouth via Sheffield in one day, for example) and some 40 years later still suffer pain as a result! As a fun and practical classic nothing can beat a late softop 80", with a softop 86" a fairly close second. |

You will enjoy it.
Small bought hers quite a few years ago now and as a slightly built 60 year old she would not be parted from it. She uses it as her preferential form of transport on every conceivable occasion other than a long distance trip. Be prepared for 15 to 18 mpg , as back in those days the price of fuel is not the factor it is today. Small is a member of the Series One club and they are a great bunch so join as soon as you can. The forum is a little antiquated, but the thought is there Good luck with your search and be patient. Got 75mph out of mine, down Redhill (s of Bristol airport) in neutral, vaguest steering I’ve ever encountered!
Unreliability for me was the fuel pump (teenage bodge and fix), fabulous part was breaking down on the way to school! I was cold as I never put the nut onto the door top bolts as used to love taking the door tops off, but without the bolt they would bow outwards and let massive draughts in! The button start, the Bakelite stuff, the bonnet spring clips, the rear light lens that used to tip inwards, BHU 348 I miss you! 2.4TDCI 90 - everyday brilliance S3 V8 Lightweight - in the garage being ignored #newchassistime S3 lightweight - 2nd car 24V fire risk with a full tilt and the windscreen down S1 80" - first car fun - 75mph in neutral downhill once #wobblesallround |
