I know a few people have been asking about roll cages and not wanting to have an internal/external type. I got an email today from Safety Devices stating that they are now manufacturing roll cages that have an internal front roll hoop.
So here you go: http://interface.envirosend.co.uk/t/r-l-udkdktd-cgjdpjd-i/ Hope it is of use to some of you...... I still love my Internal/ External cage Glyn |

I like it as I get to keep my roof rack in place, I had an SD internal/external on my green 90 and loved it.
It got used too. |

Just looking at the middle hoop - I prefer the design in mine, which replaces the original 'Safety Devices' (ie. LR Genuine) bulk head removal bar with a new one attached to the middle hoop (and is also attached to the external cage) Thereby not taking up too much additional space. We got P&P to make mine with a removable cross in addition. OK so the SD one is full internal, and mine is mainly external with just the middle hoop internal but still, I think the middle hoop on the SD one looks a little messy.....
Click image to enlarge I can see advantages to a full internal cage - less height, aesthetics from the outside, etc, but we've always seen Land Rover roll cages as multi-function - ie. external cages provide - protection the occupants, protect external panels (well, a bit!), provide an extra solid surface to push off trees etc (like in Greeni's pic above), and provide a ready made roof rack! Pam - Strange they didnt do the same with the bulkhead bar - they do it on the 50th type or L138/7 as Safety Devices call it.

Indeed, didn't think of looking at the 50th! So, can only assume some sort of geometry issue to do with fitting a full internal meant they had to shift it back a bit? Interesting.... Our blog - http://landytravels.com/ Yorkshire Off Road Club - http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net |

I suspect it's down to one of two (or possibly both) reasons...
By using a single hoop like that it wouldn't take much to convert it into an MSA compliant cage, just needs the addition of rear stays. Using a split hoop wouldn't meet motor sport regs. By designing it that way the same cage is suitable for vehicles with and without bulkheads. I'd like to see some pics of the front down tubes, seeing how they clear the dash and how much they intrude into the footwell and how they mount to the outrigger. From the description they must come down just to the rear of the front bulkhead as they've not put a second bend in the down tubes. Do you think the sun visors being sat on top of the dashboard means they hadn't figured out how they'd fit those yet ? http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

I think you're right! It is hard to see what can be done with the sun visors, but arguably the front hoop would do a pretty good job of keeping the sun out of your eyes anyway. I suspect that that cage will be very intrusive if you're sitting in the vehicle. |
