I've been here recently, see my '84 Ninety thread.
Soft tops are taller than hardtop/truck cab as the hood frame is a constant curve to stop water pooling. I changed to soft top and increased tyre size at the same time and ended up having to change my garage door and frame. All sorted though relatively easily and having a soft top is brilliant Instagram: L90andy My 1984 Ninety: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56071.html - SOLD! I had to remove the interior handle of my up and over door, I just linked the cables with cable ties.
