Mine did this last year. I changed the battery and that didn’t fix it. The speed the starter could turn the engine got slower and slower. Eventually it let me down and wouldn’t turn at all. I changed the starter for a new Bosch one and all has been fine since.
Was your last starter a new one? 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X |

I would suggest checking the ignition switch, i.e. the one at the end of the key barrel. Well known to wear and give strange starting issues.

What happens when you jump start it ? If it’s good then that would point to the battery . Also once you’ve bump started does it then restart on the key after running a while ?
Otherwise it could be a bad earth , poor battery connection , ignition switch or starter motor . In my experience with a diesel, when batteries fail they go quite suddenly. My Kawasaki Mule was turning the starter slowly , wouldn’t start unless jumped , changed battery and not been a problem since . Happened overnight Similar issue with a tractor last year . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

I'd be tempted to try the earth connections before anything else. 12 year old vehicle (same as mine) is plenty of time for thse underbody connections to get crusty or loose.

As mentioned above it sounds like the starter motor is not getting a punchy enough slug of power; earthing points, weak battery, battery terminals. If I were a betting man I think it sounds like a weak connection somewhere.
The second thing I'd look at is ignition barrel. If you change go for a ligit LR one, not aftermarket. |

I would check you earth points, I had it with my Td5 and it was the earth from the battery to the transfer box that wanted cleaning up.
When the fault it occuring, try clipping a jump lead from the engine the the negative battery post, this will confirm an earth problem. Cheers Will 2005 90 XS 1954 86'' Series 1 tilt 1968 88” 2A 200tdi 2002 110 Hardtop |

Have you tried the relay under the seats?
When mine had it occasional cutting off issues it was the ignition barrel (the bit behind where you insert the key) did you said you have changed this? Earth straps sounds like another likely cause, Have you had any work lately where these may have been dis-lodged? Good luck |

Found the fault, i even checked this yesterday with my multimeter! The Negative lead from the battery to the transfer case had a break halfway up! very strange! it was giving me a good reading yesterday. Touch wood its fine now with a new one in place! thanks for the help gents. 2007 2.4 90 fettled & remapped.
