I have a transfer box leak that I have failed to seal on various attempts. The next course of action I think is a full rebuild/upgrade with a sleeved case. Maybe the HD cross pin while I'm there.
Parts are available and cheap which makes me think the cost of, say, a rebuilt LT230 from Ashcroft must be mostly labour? So as a fairly competent home spanner-er, is this a DIY job? > 110 XS Double Cab |

Likewise, I just had mine done by Ashcrofts, with the HD diff pin and machined for the steel collar.
Some jobs on the car I just want to be done by a professional. I wouldn't have been able to machine the collar myself anyway - and at the end of the day Ashcroft's don't charge *that* much for the job. I does help that I have relatively easy access to Ashcroft's factory though, to not have to worry about shipping. 2005 Td5 90 XS 1989 V8 110 CSW |

I know what you mean. However the rebuild kit, cross pin and machined & sleeved case can be had for £320 delivered from ashcroft (after deposit returned) versus £850 (after deposit returned) for a rebuilt unit from ashcroft.
So the £530 difference is labour? Plus the 12 month, unlimited mileage, parts only, return to base, warranty > 110 XS Double Cab |

I had a transfer box rebuilt by AW Transmissions when I was in a fix with the center diff ready to go. I hate to knock Ashcroft, but at the time they simply had nothing on the shelf and were unable to assist for around 4 weeks even if I shipped mine to them. I guess a result of the success they have made in the market.
AW Transmissions came to the rescue in my case and were able to take a discovery td5 transfer box I came by and rebuild with the diff lock, etc all inside a week. Andrew was exceptionally helpful every step and even tracked the delivery back down to me and advised accordingly when it was delayed (no fault of his). Will certainly deal with again and I'm sure he would be more than willing to accommodate additions and upgrades. http://awtransmissions.co.uk/priceguide1.html |

It's something I'm considering doing as mine has the usual leak from the intermediate shaft. My plan was to get a spare box, get the casing sleeved by Ashcrofts or whoever, and then rebuild it. I don't think you need any special tools more exotic than a decent set of bearing pullers. The LT230 is a pretty basic unit.
At least that way you'll know it's been done properly with proper brand bearings etc. |

No reason why you can't do it yourself provided you are reasonably competent. Probably the trickiest parts of the job are the taking the measurements needed to set the correct preloads, which requires some specialist measuring tools if you don't have access the the genuine setting blocks.
It is a fairly rudimentary box. Spend the cash you save on labour on an ATB centre diff. |

Other than setting the preloads on some of the bearings it’s a matter of taking the bolts out in the right order. I’ve thought about it but I would only have a weekend to pull it apart and get it back together before I’d need to be driving again.
