The Spudfan household has come down with a vomiting/diarrhoea bug. We are in various stages of recovery. My wife is well on the road to recovery, I'm not far behind but our daughter, who has special needs, is not so lucky. Probably due to her immune system being a little different to ours.
Anyway I noticed that our daughter, who is 23, had placed her doll, which she has had from a very young age, on the pillow beside my wife. The reason being that she did not wish to pass on her bug to her doll. When she has recovered she will take her back. My mate at work has a son who has special needs, and he is a really lovely lad. He is coming up 7. Not quite learned to talk yet, but my mate says there are the odd words coming. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

You have to throw the rulebook out the window. What someone else's child will do at six or seven might take until eight or nine or ten ...for my daughter to do. It just takes time and patience and to accept that your life will be slightly different to everybody else.... including retirement. It won't be just the Mrs and me looking at each in retirement as we will allways have our daughter with us.

With you there Spudfan. We also have a 23 year old daughter with special needs and she is an only child. As you say there will always be three us for everything now and in the future. No weekend getaways for two.
Little things that others take for granted are major achievements. Recently she has started walking home from her day services and we meet her somewhere along the way. As she says herself her confidence is building and maybe she will walk home alone before the summer is over. It's 10 minutes walk in town which doesn't sound like much but it has taken nearly 20 years to get where we are now. Look up an article "Welcome to Holland" for a little insight. A lady expecting her child likens it to a trip to Italy so she reads the guide books, packs the clothes, plans the days out. When the plane lands it is in Holland not Italy. She will never get to Italy and in Holland she must stay so all her plans are in tatters but when she becomes accustomed to her situation she realises that Holland has a lot to offer. My mate said there are special needs on his ex girl friends side, Their nephew will only talk about things that interests him, IE Computer games and that's it. He is a very bright lad my mate said. i think there is more now for special needs than there was when i was at school, I have been left school now neary 17 years. So i was in school in the 90s and i dont think there was very much help back then sadly. i do have a much younger sister who is about to turn 17, so i do see the parental side of things, as i treat her more like a daughter than a sister, That's how lucky she is. My mate said to me, ( who has 9 children now) he said go into their world, and look a Pratt etc, because they maybe wiping your arse when you get to that point in life. I did pass that info onto my pal that became a dad 7 years ago and that stuck with him to this very day, and he has turned out to be a cracking dad. you never really grow up do you
I really do have some very fond memories playing with my sister, 10 years ago. Building her tents and making lego buildings for her little farm set etc. Making up stories for her. Now its sod you Andy  Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
