I've tried sifting through the various clutch threads but can't find a relevant thread for the symptoms.
This morning all was good, the 07 2.4 TDCI drove like normal. This afternoon on the way home from work I managed 5-10 normal gear changes, then the gear changes rapidly declined in quality! They started to make that crunching noise when you force it from one gear to another but not continuous like if you try to change gears without using the clutch at all! Here are the symptoms: The clutch pedal operates and feels normal. There is no issue with disengaging gears. (no surprises there!) While in gear, driving is normal (other than not changing gears!!!) With the clutch depressed, I can't engage a new gear without forcing the gear stick (significant effort) while lifting the clutch (a bit like when the syncro doesn't line up for reverse). When I do the above to change gear, it changes with a crunch but not a long grinding noise like when you are not using a clutch and don't match the engine revs and speed. Transfer box changes all operate like normal with engine running. Gear changes are fine with the engine off. If i start in gear with the clutch depressed then the engine labours to turn over (the battery is on its way out anyway but still has enough juice to start fine enough). The clutch fluid level had dropped about a centimetre (half an inch in old money) but not enough to draw air into the system, also topping up didn't help. The vehicle is only 1 yr old to me, I'm not sure of the clutch history but haven't noticed anything untoward in the time I have owned it. There has previously been a slight rattle with clutch out that goes when the clutch is depressed but nothing that I would describe as a 'death rattle' - it is drowned out by the fan on only the middle setting! Having previously thought that this minimal noise was normal, i'm starting to wonder if I have made a grave error . I'm hoping that there is a relatively straightforward answer and that I just didn't find it. For now i'm hoping that someone far more knowledgeable than me weighs in with their thoughts and experience! |

Either way, I take it I'll need to drop the clutch - was definitely hoping for a simpler fix!

Just check the clutch fluid level. It might be worth giving it a quick bleed through to see if it improves.

Thanks for the replies.
William, the pedal still feels firm, topped up the fluid (only took 1 cm) so I am confident that is not the issue - I was hopeful though! LR90, regrettably I think that is indeed the problem area, I chatted to a former vehicle mechanic at work and he is confident that the release bearing has died. Either way i'll have to skin my knuckles and drop the clutch! - Pictures will probably follow depending on how frustrated I get! While it is out, i'll replace the clutch (up-rated from clutchfix - anyone recommend a particular supplier? otherwise i'll go cheapest) cover and release bearing (+ slave kit). I'll also check the spigot bearing and output shaft. Is there anything else I should be checking or any pitfalls to watch out for? Otherwise i'll just mine the forum for the relevant topics when I get stuck! |

Speak to Luke at LOF clutches. He specialises in Land Rover clutches. Tell him Jeremy sent you his way. Just ordered a clutch from him yesterday. Recommend you upgrade to 2.2 release bearing and also replace the output shaft. They do everything you need in a kit.

Turned out I underestimated the amount of rattle that constitutes a death rattle, problems were caused by an escaped spring....
