Posting this in general instead of the insurance and finance section so more people will read it.
Someone recently found out their insurance company they used had buried in the small print "defenders are not covered for theft unless a “fully functional” and “approved” tracking device is installed." And it appears to be growing trend.
I doubt companies like the NFU would do this but lesser known or cheaper insurers just might! Worth checking the small print even if it takes an hour or more.. Thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/LandRover/comment...e_warning/ |

Surely they should disclose this when taking out a Defender policy as it is quite clearly a significant factor. Not sure they would get away with it if challenged.
On a brighter note, all mine are 90/110/127 vintage, so Not Defender and therefore covered! 80" 1948 Lightweight V8 Bowler Tomcat 130 Station wagon 90 300tdi (Santana PS10 pick up) Range Rover L322 (Ful fat) |

Hopefully you will never be in a position to put that to the test. It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten

It is a common requirement nowadays.
Churchill make it very clear in the T & Cs. To save any delay or hassle, I provided them with the installation certificate when I took the policy out and insisted they acknowledge receipt in writing! |

Trackers are not required on all defender policies... mainly it will come down to value and on occasion, post code. (other factors may influence)
Some insurers will say over £40k value it must have a tracker, usually a Cat 5 or 7, other insurers may have different value limits. Post code may come into play if in a high theft area for that type of vehicle, but I personally have seen very few post codes flag this. It's not just defenders either, it's any sought after vehicle - another hot one is the key-less entry BMW M models. But the main factor really is value when trackers become an insurance requirement Carlie Howden Insurance - Specialist Vehicle Call us on 01635 874646 for a quotation |

Hi Carlie,
It's probably not possible to answer this but I like many on here (I suspect) have numerous insurance policies such as; home / contents, x2 cars (x3 including wifes) business are there any obvious things I should be looking at ie reduced mileage, tracker, combined policy etc to try and reduce either individual elements or the combined value? and are you able to give an indication of % reductions for the options available? |

Really the matter of theft or preventing it is with the owner i.e. the more layers of protection against theft you have the less likely the vehicle will be stolen, as for a tracker, yes they are a great addition but they are not infallible and to a professional car thief can easily be disabled. If the insurance company stipulated you had to have at least three security devices fitted which had to be Thatcham approved I could understand it, not just a tracker.
I read with interest and with sadness both on this forum and others when a thread is started about a Defender theft, however when asked what security they had fitted often it is none at all and they have just relied on LR’s crappy alarm. Yes, you are right the MP John Hayes has suggested it and it was rather worrying that when the question about hanging and bringing it back was put to the new PM during PM questions he did not answer it.. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Unfortunately it is impossible to answer as some insurers may load differently for each factor... some are instantly computer driven, some delegated, some guide rated... my advice would be to look at a broker such as ourselves as we will look at multi-policy, or putting with different insurers, whichever is more beneficial financially for you. Plus you get multi discounts for having everything in one place We do everything here, specialist vehicles (kit car, 4x4, high performance, modified car/van/bike, imports, trackday), standard vehicle car/van/bike, home combined, building and contents separate, landlords... worth looking into when each come up for renewal! They can come over in dribs and drabs or all at once it doesnt matter Must be Thatcham branch for club discounts though - 01635 874646 Howden Insurance - Specialist Vehicle Call us on 01635 874646 for a quotation |

You're right, the prevention does generally lie with the owner, same with anything really... you wouldn't wonder around a supermarket with your cash on display, youd put it in a wallet and in a bag/pocket. The insurance will have requirements such as Thatcham 2 immobiliser, thatcham 1alarm/immobiliser or tracker cat5/7 depending on the vehicle value/risk. That is all the insurance 'requires' so that must be met for the insurance to be valid in a claim, if you cant meet the requirements then you may not be offered a quote with that insurer or may have an additional load as the risk is higher than expected. Obviously any additional theft prevention is great! But it rarely effects insurance as its additional and more for your own security and piece of mind in most cases. A lot of these vehicles have had a lot of mods, time and care put in and would be hard to replace - so it's in your best interest to make sure it's as secure as possible, as with any prized possession.
