Adding a 12 v power to dashboard
Hello


Would like to fit a 12v power to dash to power a GPS / Sat Nav

What's the easiest way for someone who does not like car wiring Smile

You can add inline fusing, permanent crimped connectors. You could use the inspection light connectors on the corner of the dashboard if you can find a connector. Try a military surplus light for that.
If ambitious fit a bulkhead socket like mud stuff ones to centre of dashboard. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Use a standard fuse size 'add a fuse' or 'add a tap' to the existing 12v socket placement in the factory fuse box under the steering wheel.
Satnav is power is likely to be well under 1A so I'd fit a 1A fuse for the sat nav and keep the same for the existing 12v socket.
Then just run the power up to where you need it. (There are a few earth points in the vicinity too.)

If you want it isolated just slip the fuse out. Thumbs Up

Unless he's altered it radically, that won't work with the glass fuses used on a Series III.

For simplicity, an inline fused feed taken from the black and red dash sockets would be easiest. If you want something more comprehensive with capacity for future needs, then plumb in an auxiliary fuse board that takes modern blade fuses and then run whatever feeds you need from that. Darren

Yes its for the series Smile


It does not have them modern style fuses, I think it uses bolts in various sizes... Big Cry Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up


Will look at getting a feed off the black and red leads... don't want to unsettle the dash too much as its a nest of wires.

Will this feed go off when ignition off?

From memory (it's a long time since I last owned a Series III), they're permanently live. I don't think there's much at all that's ignition live, except the gauges, so you'd need to find a feed that can be used to trigger a relay. Darren

The dash plugs are permanently live

I used one of these sockets and mounted it to the side of the accessory switch panel in the centre of the dash, and ran the cables through the bulkhead directly to the battery.
