A bit of a different one this. I like the look of Drls in the bumper on defenders but I always have my side lights on while driving as I prefer the rear lights on too, so I have two questions.
1: can I fit Drls to be on at the same time as side lights that then go out when full beam is switched on? 2: would the above be legal? Any ideas or even a wiring diagram of the above (if it's legal) would be great

From driving a Saab I've got used to driving with side lights on all the time, so was thinking along similar lines with DRL's.
As I understand it the DRL's should turn off or dim when side lights or headlights are turned on. You can get auto dim units which dim the DRL when side/head lights are turned on. I liked the idea of the DRL coming on full again with High beam but then it does get complicated (for me anyway). As I have halo headlights wired into to the side lights I think i'll wire my DRL's to just go off with side lights. But watching this thread with interest just in case... Don't know if this helps you with the legality...
Most DRL controllers will dim the DRL’s when the side lights are on which really makes DRL's less effective if you drive with sidelight on in daytime In any case the law states that Daytime running lights must be bright enough that they can be seen clearly in daylight and as a result are too bright to be used at night time when they would cause dazzle. Daytime running lights should therefore go off automatically when headlights are switched on. Retro fitted DRL should be installed such that they activate automatically when the engine starts and switch off when headlamps are turned on. If this is not the case then you must ensure that you manually turn DRL off at night When side lights are used DRL's must automatically dim For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

Hmmm interesting, so they could be on at the same time as sidelights and off with headlights, but dim with sidelights I'm not sure I want that
 Can I ask where you got the info from please gilarion? I wonder if that still applies when retro fitting them. Ray

Thanks for that according to the retrofit section of the U.K. Gov one it only says they must be turned off when the "headlamps" are switched on with no mention of dimming with sidelights but it says for manufacturer fitted Drls they must dim on sidelights so I might be able to fit them the way I want with them being retro fit? I suppose that's open to interpretation. Ray

Technically is quite easy to have what you are looking for, either with a kit or with a relay.
Legally, well can't really help with that. |

I presume I just wire them upas normal but take the light feed from the headlight instead of the sidelight wiring. Still don't know if I should risk it legally

IMO the DRL will only dazzle people when they are used in the dark. If it's dark you'll have your main beam on and therefore DRL will be off/dimmed, so no issue.
If it every was an issue all you need to do is swap the wire from main beam feed to side light feed. James

Why not feed the rear side lights from the DRL feed with a diode in line and then put a diode in the factory wiring.
That way - ignition on - DRL and rear tail lights are on but not back feeding to the front side lights. Then when you put your side/head lights on manually. The DRL controller cuts power to the DRL's and the factory loom then illuminates the tail lights without back feeding to the DRL's. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

As an aside. A lot of newer vehicles now illuminate the trailers sidelights when the DRL's are active.
This is especially effective on caravans/box trailers as they have outline markers. Although I always tow with dipped beam on insted of relying on the DRL's  2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
