Hi all
Ive fitted my Aux lights on the roof of my 110 some time ago and having just fitted my raised air intake this month I took on the task to wire in the lights. So far so good - they all work and come on and off when powered as expected when tested. I have the original aux light switch on the dash and an aux light wiring loom with the relay and connectors etc, however I am a bit unsure where the best pace to take the main beam relay trigger power from. I have done a good search on here and found a few suggestions but am not able to identify which wire should be taped into, and whether it is better to use a wire from the light switch in the cab or one to the lights under the bonnet. A quick look on the wiring diagram for my 2012 2.2 points to a grey/pink wire (?) - so before I go out with my cutters & crimpers - is this the right cable ?? or should I be looking some where else? (remember that I am a nurse and not a mech-techy type - I do have a muti-meter but not totally sure how to use it !) Any advice would be gratefully received from any one who can shed some light onto my issue ! At the switch the main beam output is
Blue with a white stripe The main beam headlight wire colours are Blue with grey stripe (Left Hand) Blue with black strip (Right Hand) These are all reasonable sized cables to be joining to though. Another place you can take a feed from is the warning light wire into the instrument pack, this is again blue with a grey stripe (edit: or blue with an orange stripe) but a smaller 0.5mm² wire. This is where the factory kit picks up its feed. Martin 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW Last edited by Martin on 26th Apr 2019 8:55am. Edited 1 time in total |

Depending on your aux light relay + wiring kit remember that the Defender aux switch gives a switched ground path for the relay, not a switched live.
The main beam feed is required to the relay coil (output from switch to the other side of the coil), and a feed from the switched output of the relay back to the switch to illuminate the orange LED on it. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

many thanks Martin !
just got to attack the dash with a screw driver now ! I have been referring the great resource of the forum and following the wiring diagram with the defender aux switch and the numbered points and the relay that all line up with my set up . I’ve got to wire in the switch lights at the same time but was stumped on were to get the main beam feed from ... I’ll be using the + & - from the cig socket for the lights on the switch as suggested many thanks Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 Last edited by wyvern on 25th Apr 2019 7:31pm. Torx T30, it's not too bad to get to the instrument pack connector
Two self tapping screws on the top, lift off cover. Two long screws on the front, remove bottom cover. Two more self tapping screws behind bottom cover holding pack in place. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Hi Devon - thanks but sorted the connection
The comment ‘landrover - teaching owners to be mechanics for 70 yrs’ swings true in my case ! With Martins encouragement .. Took the dash to bits and inspected the wire loom at the back ... no blue grey cable .. tried a blue black on but no luck so plan B. under the bonnet on the Left side found the Blue Grey on and taped into there - success ! now have light that come on with the main beam when the switch is depressed. next problem -I have the switch working, pins wired as per the diagram below 1,2, 4,5. - but the operating orange light light does no illuminate when the spot light are on, however the switch background light illuminates when lights the other dash lights come on.. so any pointers here ?? Sorry I think I was looking at a LHD diagram It's blue with orange on my RHD 2007MY and 2015MY diagrams.
Black with blue is diff lock Do the spots only come on with the switch pressed in? If so for some reason you're not getting the 12V feedback from the spotlight output to the switch (the blue/yellow wire to pin 5). Or the LED in the switch is faulty. If the illumination is working and the [switch in - spots on with main beam, switch out - spots off] then the ground paths are OK. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Hi Martin
the lights work correctly with the high beam when the switch is on - and correctly that they dont come on with the main beam when turned off . The little orange light doesn't come on at all but the plug is illuminated when the dash lights are on ... they dont come on at any other time. I think that I have all the 4 wires going to the right place ... so it may be a faulty switch ...
