Constant whirring sound coming from engine 2008 110 2.4
Hey all,

Hope you're all good! Purchased my Puma last May and its generally been great - minus all the general repairs that come with owning a defender.

I've had a new turbo, brakes and servo in the last year - but this sound coming from the engine has been constant (i think). It's now at the top of my ever growing list of fixes haha

You hear it on idle and when driving.

Any ideas on what it could be? Had a full service and repairs in December and it seemed to be fixed after the Turbo was changed and small crack in the exhaust was welded back together.

I'm not sure if this is normal - but I can't seem to hear it in other videos. Maybe it's a minor thing that I don't need to worry about.

I'm now starting to question if it ever disappeared and I was blindsided by the bill i had to pay haha

Link doesn’t work, unfortunately.

Try a new serpentine belt (there is an AC and Non AC version), in the process have the bearings checked on the tensioner and other bearings.

There is no guarantee that this is it, but would make a light whirling noise depending on its severity, squeaking is another thing that can happen but that’s not always the way it goes.

Or you could get out a home made stereoscope type contraption, but with moving parts that’s a bit of a problem to hear where it is actually coming from.

If it’s performing properly, and driving okay I wouldn’t worry too much in the mean time. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

what custom 90 said, I decided to change my belt as a precaution at 12yrs old and 50k miles approx and found one of the pully bearings about to fail, you may need a special tool to undo the fan from the fan pully BAS do one but others are available. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Cheers guys - appreciate the advice. Going to have a look in to it this afternoon and figure out if thats the issue. Looks like something i could do myself as well to save a couple bob!

Re fan removal.
For the 2.4/2.2 Puma’s It’s a normal thread, so anti clockwise to loosen nut.

For the 2.4/2.2 Puma’s the spanner is 36mm. I found the draper 37536 single ended open 36mm spanner ideal and about £6 on line.

The nut can be very tight so spanner may need a sharp tap with a hammer to loosen the nut. I purchased a tool from Bell Auto Services (BAS) to hold the pulley in place while I used the spanner, even then I had to use half of a trolley jack handle on the breaker bar on the pulley tool and the other half of the trolley jack handle on the spanner to get sufficient torque to loosen the fan nut.

Hey chaps - I had a little look around today and it looks like the bearings have seen better days. Reckon I should change these to - could they be part of the problem? The belt also does look quite worn. Ive attached the photos below - the sound is definitely coming from there.

Also the cap that goes on the top right bearing seems to be missing too - any ideas on the part number for this?

That’s the air conditioning compressor pulley cover. Part number PRF500030 , circa £20 on line.

See part 4 in the diagram https://www.lrworkshop.com/pt/diagrams/lan...ssor_45003

However your original pictures don’t show an air con compressor fitted ! And your last picture shows a 2.2 engine !

take the belt off, check each of the pullies for play, replace those that have play or are noisy when you spin them.

It looks like the car has been stood whilst wet as the pullies are quite rusted, I would definitely change that belt as well.

As others have said yours is none air con, there are different belts for air con and non-aircon so be sure to get the correct one.
