I did this - just used a back door wheel carrier bolted flat to the Brownchurch Roof Rack using some self fabricated brackets and a load of M12 high tensile bolts.
Getting the tyre up there can be difficult - I just lifted onto bonnet then literally rolled it up the bonnet and then the windscreen onto the roof |

What type size wheel are you putting up there? It’s alot of weight on top of the roof and may well affect the handling your use to with your defender. 2015 HT XS 90

Hi Jas
Someone here will give to the answer in regards to securing the wheel to the roof rack but for my two pence I would say first stand next to your Landy and lift the spare wheel above your head to try to get it onto the rack. The wheel and tyre (depending what you have) is very heavy. if you feel that you could end up hurting yourself then I would leave it on the rear door. I tend to use my mirrors for rear visibility more than the rear view mirror. Its not worth putting your back out and having trouble for years to come. Regards Mark |

Mine's up there as I have no carrier on the rear door. It is a heavy lump to get up there, I tend to use a strap to pull it up, and slide it up and down the back ladder. Currently held on by a couple of ratchet straps and a beefy chain, will I procrastinate about something more permanent or putting it on the back again!

As other have said the issue really is weight. Getting the wheel up there and back down safely is a problem, you’re putting something in the region of 50kg on your roof rack.
Adding the weight of the wheel to that of the average defender roof rack you’re not far off the roof load limit- so essentially you then cannot use your rack to carry anything else, safely, with the wheel up there. 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2 |

I have trouble lifting mine onto the supplied carrier never mind trying to get it on the roof. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

I did exactly what Grouse said above. I need to put mine up there at the start of the towing season as I can’t hook the caravan up with the wheel on the door. Yes, lifting it above your head can test some people, but I’m tall and still young so it’s not a struggle. Carriers pop up on here from time to time and range from “free to uplift” to HOW MUCH It’s certainly solved my problem and I wouldn’t say it handles greatly differently in my day to day usage, but I’m not a fast driver and am usually steady through bends etc. |

If I'm towing I will often carry the Defender's spare (Blindo) and a standard steel spare for the trailer on the roof rack. I stand on the tailgate to lift them up, and to get them off I'll stand on the rack and lower on a rope.
The standard rear door mounting works fine on the rack (Patriot) or use a ratchet strap. |

Likewise , I store mine on the roof rack. It’s really not a problem lifting it on or off , I wouldn’t say I was even all that strong . I suppose it depends how much of a habit you make of getting a puncture .
Hannibal make a dedicated spare wheel mount for their racks , I imagine it would also fit many others . The only major drawback is that you’re reducing your access height by even more and you’ll no longer get into those height restricted outdoor car parks ! In terms of handling it really makes very little difference but then it would depend on your suspension set up , mines a 110 DC with standard HD rear springs but uprated dampers https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

When I go on a "real" off road trip I take 2 spares. One is on a carrier at the rear, effectively the same as the standard position, the other is on the roof rack mounted on a standard rear door spare wheel carrier. As others have said the issue with the roof rack mounted spare is the weight, if you only need one spare I would seriously consider whether it is worth putting it on the roof. 2002 110 TD5 White

Thank you very much for your replies - you’ve provided me, and others, with excellent experience and advice. I didn’t expect a ‘one size fits all’ answer, and it’s interesting to see different people’s takes on the feasibility of a roof mounted spare. I shan’t rule it in or out, but when I get back from Cornwall I will do the lift test and see if that red cards the idea! I had thought about the C of G issue, but my brain hadn’t reached the obvious issue of (even worse) height clearance. I already have a whip aerial on the 110, and I’m aware of the limitations this introduces (though it’s easy to unscrew). Mucho grateful! 😊 Jas |
