Having a crisis about rust after warranty expires
Last year the paint around the windscreen bubbled, so was fixed under warranty.
12 months on, it's back in exactly the same space. Reasonable to assume LR in Hull bodged it in the same way they bodged the other work.
I'll try York this time to see how they get on.

What I'm worried about is what happens when the warranty has expired. Can anyone give me an idea of how much something like this would cost to have repaired by a decent independent? That is, done properly with some sort of anti-corrosion behind the metal.

Thanks

The proper way to fix this is to remove the screen frame entirely, remove the screen from the frame, media blast the frame and then repaint it with proper etch primer first. Even then you can still get issues due to the construction of the frame, it is made out of four pieces that are slotted together then welded from the rear - you get corrosion between the pieces where they are butted together.
A body shop will most likely just flat back the corrosion in situ, repaint it and hope for the best.

Some defenders are worse than others - I have in my garage a screen frame from a 1990 defender in perfect condition that I have saved to fit to my Puma.

Paint warranty is still valid (not 5 years old yet). I'm just concerned how much this is likely to cost me next time.

All the main dealer does is call the local “chips away” mobile paint guy who rocks up and does the quickest repair that looks ok. None have Bodyshops, media blasters, spray booths etc.

This means you’re in a continual warranty loop as they are probably painting over the corrosion.

Personally I’d bite the bullet and pay for a proper repair.

It just shows you how cheap things are made, If they can get away with only putting minimal amount of paint on they will! Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

the best advice I can give is - don't fight it.

buy a deck chair and just sit back and watch it rot

sorry but I've concluded the only answer is to get bits done as and when (preferably early stages) - and that's that.

It's a good point though, done properly it should last longer. I've 2 years on a windscreen frame under warranty and the screen was removed by a body shop - touch wood it's still OK. Isn't the frame also aluminium which is harder to paint? 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2
