From a marketing point of view it makes sense as it generates articles and online discussion.

From a development point of view. Not so much.

As you would expect, it looked like Censored going around the 'ring. Our Grafty did a much better job in his TD5.

When i saw the original story I thought 'why are they testing a diesel defender with say approx 150bhp around the ring', it seemed pretty pointless to me.

Reading this article though, if this engine does put out circa 400bhp it seems to make a lot more sense that they want to make sure it will go round corners without toppling over onto it's roof at the first kink in the road. 2015 Defender 90XS HT

For me it’s more of a publicy stunt to create this exact type of engagement. Of all the private test tracks that JLR have access to why pick the most public and iconic one....... as you know you’ll get snapped by the press!

To my mind the mere fact that they are considering a "sporting" version is simply confirmation that the new Defender will be so far removed from the Defender concept of a genuine multipurpose light truck that it will be just another pointless SUV. Probably a good replacement for the Discovery concept that was lost when the Disco 5 turned out to be a Freelander.

The world is awash with fashionable but pointless SUVs, the world lacks anything like the original Land-Rover at the moment.

Projekt Grenadier looks like it may well be the champion of a proper off roader while the new Defender maybe just another JLR SUV soft roader with a slightly more boxy appearance than Discover and Range Rover. Defender 90XS SW

Don't get too hung up on it being 'sporty' or not capable off road just because its lapping the Nurburgring. Nearly all manufacturers mostly use it for durability and robustness testing as there isn't anywhere else that can input the loads and cycles into a car so quickly. Nearly every system on the car is worked extremely hard - powertrain, cooling, brakes, hvac, even body and trim robustness are worked to their limits in a single lap.
As for why its got low profile tyres on a larger wheel, its all about offering the customer choice direct from the factory. Old Defender only came on 16" wheels yet the first thing a lot of customers did was upgrade to 18". At least this time the choice will be there without the money going to Bowler or Kahn etc.

Simply more "supposition" IMHO.
The odds are of course that it will, because JLR have a whole range of powerplants in this configuration, I mean they've got "an in-line 6" with 400HP,...how good would that be, but,.....I don't think so.
Like I've said before, NOTHING concrete from JLR,...well done to them for their secrecy!

To me, all this points to a vehicle that is potentially good everywhere. Who wouldn’t want a vehicle that’s good off road AND goes round corners?!
I remember a while back Land Rover hinting at a family of Defenders. If that’s the case then that would be great for all of us. Those who want to spec a hose out 33” tyred off roader can do so, just as those who want a family wagon or someone who wants something with low profile tyres and a turbo petrol engine.
Supposition is right pickles, we’ve yet to see whether it’s one vehicle trying to to many things or lots of different vehicles under the Defender family name. Interesting times

As a couple have mentioned, it is nothing to do with being sporty to run a vehicle around Nurburgring.
Different departments have test procedures that must be met. This is a good place for them to get the pass.
Brakes, suspension, fueling, cooling, powertrain etc all have a test spec that has to be met. They will often have a few different vehicles they are working on, all at different stages of the development cycle. Not necessarily just defenders, could be jags and rangies as well.

Land Rover also needs to show the US market that it has a good sized petrol engine as a comparison to the two market leaders, Toyota (4 Runner / Tacoma) and Jeep (Wrangler).


The testing that Land Rover needs to show us next is the new 'Defender' completing the Rubicon Trail and Moab. Driving fast around a sand pit in the Middle East wont cut it. I've said it before, if the potential US owners cant swap the wheels and tyres for a set of 35's then they wont get out of their Rubicon's to buy it. Toyota owners wont trust the reliability until it has been proven and that could be many years down the line.

Lets not even mention that the Americans still love pick ups and in this size vehicle they now have the Jeep Gladiator (raced at this years King of the Hammers Everyman Challenge and finished first time out), and Ford Ranger, both of which was released this year.

Apart from Discovery 5 owners coming out of PCP deals I am still struggling to see what Land Rover is going to market this vehicle as. I do know that Jerry and his pet cravat will be on stage to introduce the new Defender standing in front of a big video screen showing the suited audience old images of what an old Defender could do no doubt with a disclaimer that you wont be able to do any of that with the new one.

The Americans have a phase, Bro-dozers. All looks no action .

Not sure where the idea comes from that everyone puts 18" rims on Defenders, the vast majority I see are on 16" rims either alloys or steels, with chunky tyres with deep sidewalls.

Something occurred to me in reading this thread about how the disco 5 has replaced the freelander "slot", I'm now more convinced than ever that the defender (I refuse to capitalise it) will indeed be a Discovery replacement to all intents and purposes. If they were serious about it as a working vehicle, the test mules we saw would be double cab pickups and work trucks, not disco4 clones.

I'm even happier than before I bought a real Defender when I had chance. But nevertheless cant help but feel this was a real missed opportunity to make a successful proper off roader that gave the market what it wanted. Instead we yet again have JLR telling the market what it wants...and it just doesn't work that way. 2011 110 USW

Be we are a minority, they want volume.

I hear it banded around, but if we did a poll, how many of the supposed hardcore ‘proper’ defender owners on this forum have honesty hosed out the inside of their vehicle? I mean really? I did on our 130 to wash out a spilt milkshake from McDonalds but that was it.

Do people do this with a Landcruiser, L200 or DMax? Granted you can hose the bed out but that’s not what people are saying. Most on here have ticked the XS trim and wanted premium leather, heated seats, alcantara headlining etc etc. We are part of the stats that told LR .... more upmarket and more spec. 1951 80" S1 2.0
