Hi
We are reaching the interesting part of my brothers restoration of his 1986 Ninety CSW. We fitted the engine to the chassis today and now have to fit the gearbox. I was wondering if it would be easier to take the engine out again, join the engine and box together on the floor then lift the whole lump in ? my reasoning being only 4 points to line up. Any thoughts or fit them separately? I would add the gearbox to the engine, now that the engine is in situ.
The job is much easier if you use two long threaded studs in the flywheel housing, to guide the gearbox in. |

It's possible, using plenty of tree strops I've used in the past.

I'd do them separately. Motor and box is a big old lump to move about. A hanging gearbox is easier to locate on the back of the fixed and mounted engine.
At least, it was for me 😊 HTH Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Hi
Sounds like I should carry on as planned then fitting the box to the engine in the chassis. I think I will take off the gearbox mounts to allow more wriggle room before fitting them back to the chassis once the box is bolted to the engine 1984 One-Ten CSW 2010 XS USW (sold) 1957 Series One 88 diesel 1958 Series One 88 4x2 Last edited by seriesonenut on 11th Feb 2019 8:10am. As you have the body off, you either have to persuade the engine and gearbox together while they're on the floor, or while one is solidly mounted to the chassis. I'd pick the latter!

When me and my dad did an engine conversion we added the full works together and lifted the full works into the subframe. Made life easier Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Looking good.
I have lifted both engine and gbox in/out complete several times with bodywork in place. For your case with bare chassis I would of done it as individuals, but prob gbox first. It doesn't really matter, and yours is in and looking good. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
