Severely ill working lab
Our three year old working Labrador Cooper has been at the vet hospital since Wednesday.

He initially had acute vomiting and diarrhoea which started on Tuesday.

Tuesday night there was evidence of a small amount of bloody in his vomit, so rushed him to the vets.

They weren’t too concerned and administered some anti sickness medicine and recommend rest.

He was fine Wednesday day time, but became seriously ill Wednesday night, when we rushed him to the vet and they’ve kept him in since.

They have x-rayed him and ultra sounded his tummy and all appears fine (if a little gassy).

His sickness and diarrhoea has improved and today they took him off the sickness medication.

However, he has developed stiffness and swelling on his joints, which keeps getting worse. They’ve increased the strength of his pain killers three times now and he’s currently on a pretty serious opioid.

He doesn’t have a temperature and the vets are at a loss to what has caused this.

The blood tests have come back negative for anything obvious and he doesn’t have a temperature.

However, Googling suggests septic arthritis or immune-mediated polyarthritis, fit the symptoms (excluding the lack of temperature).

Basically nothing is happening over the weekend while they keep him in. They’re considering sampling the joints, but that won’t happen until Monday (plus the time to culture the samples).

I got a bit shirty with the vet (I had instructed them to run all the blood and stool tests on Wednesday night, but they didn’t deem it necessary until yesterday - blood back today, but waiting for a stool sample since the diarrhoea has improved) and he suggested we could have him transferred to a specialist.

Do we have any vets on here? Has anyone heard of anything like this? 2011 CSW XS 90

Live on the North East coast and can confirm dogs started collapsing within hours of going on the beach. Last time I was home it was totally deserted. Everyone at first thought it was linked to all the dead shellfish that were washing up, then seals started dying to. Seems it my not by linked to that having read an article the other day about dogs been taken ill suddenly & a possible covid link. Hope everything works out for you.

Not a vet, but had similarish symptoms with one of our dogs a few years back, its turned out to be sepsis. However, sepsis should be picked with blood tests if they test for it, always worth asking the vet the question.

It does sound like the symptoms that owners are experiencing after visits to various beaches or popular dog walking areas.

Hope the pup has a speedy recovery. Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

Thank you for the responses.

Morning update: they think it might be pancreatitis or prostatitis.

The urine results show some bacteria, so they started him on a broad spectrum antibiotic last night.

The plan for today is to starve him, take some additional x-rays and sedate him to do a full ultrasound.

The joint swelling has apparently subsided, but he’s still very stiff / odd gate and nauseous. 2011 CSW XS 90

hope your pal gets on the mend soon Thumbs Up Jasper has had his fair share of wars too, a injection behind the eye, and stones in his water works, The vet was concerned that his bladder could explode as he couldn't pee. She had to put a stint in him, just to drain his bladder. He is now on a special diet sadly now. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Update: They started him a strong dewormer yesterday and are continuing to keep him on the antibiotics.

They sedated him yesterday to do a full ultrasound and some additional x-rays.

His pancreas and bile duct were pretty inflamed, but the tests are still coming back negative for the marker for pancreatitis.

They said he seemed a lot happier during the night and this morning.

They’re going to take him off the anti-sickness medication and provided he is still eating / drinking and his condition doesn’t worsen, he can probably come home tomorrow, fingers crossed.

I think Cooper will end up on a special diet now too. 2011 CSW XS 90

He's back home now!

Covered in shaved patches and looking a bit sorry for himself, but seems happy enough.

They've got him on a five day antibiotic, a three day dewormer and a five days of codeine (surprised we can't hear him rattle).

The vets theory is still acute pancreatitis, but from my research I think giardia appears to fit the symptoms better (but neither option fits his symptoms perfectly).

Anyway, he's back for a check up on Thursday and we'll get the results from his stool sample / bacterial cultures then.

I have to say the vets have been amazing with him.

Thank you for the support. Stu 2011 CSW XS 90

Hello SJM2018

We have been watching this generally around us in West Berkshire for about two weeks now,
and have friends 'in the north' that first signalled this, very worrying when your dog could be
on the receiving end.

Hope Cooper is on the mend now....

So pleased to hear Cooper is on the road to recovery now.

If it is Giardia he has contracted it is very unpleasant and he will have been thru the mill the past few days, I contracted the Human strain of it in a sewage shaft several years back not a pleasant experience.

Paws crossed he continues to make good progress. 2015 HT XS 90
