Mine is insured with he NFU , I have always found that they are okay with alterations to the standard vehicle and most of the time do not charge extra premium. There has only been one sticking point that was when I wanted to fit Alive comfort springs which lowered the height and the uprated rear anti roll bar, they had to contact the underwriter, I was not allowed to fit them myself and had to provide a copy of the bill for the fitting. Have you tried to get a garage to fit something you haven't bought from them, my local Indy agreed to fit them along with the Bilstein shockers as an exercise for the apprentice. Don't make old people mad.

That’s bizarre, however there was some years ago a high profile accident where a Defender crashed because the owner’s suspension modification failed and four children in the vehicle were tragically killed.

I am only guessing, but it may be that the vehicle was insured with NFU and they updated their policy after that.

It would be interesting to hear the opinions from any insurance brokers... Whistle Time is precious, waste it wisely...

I changed the steering wheel and boss, I got the same Indy to check it and give me a letter to say it was done correctly and paid him £5.00 and handed over the letter to the NFU.

Its all to do with people ability to do the job correctly, I trained as a mechanical engineer so I know what to do, I would never consider messing about with gas appliances. Don't make old people mad.

I'm with you Tommo, hate insurers with a vengeance. I never buy their "extras" as they are a complete rip off. I want to give them as little business as possible.

Likewise.

In my experience premium “adjustments” for modifications only ever go one way ie. more expensive!

Who here has ever been told “.....all your additional security measures and all your additional driving courses have resulted in us offering you a cost reduction Sir/madam”?

I’d love to know which insurers look favourably on such things as I’d happily give them the opportunity to quote for my cover.

As a matter of fact, ME. Aviva increased their premium for all the "extras" iI informed them about and then virtually cancelled them again with the benefits of the removable steering wheel and lock. This brought the increase down to less than a tenner.

My insurance charges £20 for a policy change. Even if it’s a positive one. (Admiral)
Never been an issue before, but then again never had a defender before either. Now I think it’s a total rip off.

Mine has factory fitted drum winch (L-R Special Vehicles) - is that actually a modification?
One insurer asked if it would make car go faster.
As a friend said, yes if I removed it!
Happy with NFU

It can (will) be a pain if you declare mods. Much bigger pain in event of a claim. Ex scottish & southern 110 Td5 van (shed) with PTO driven winch (L-R special vehicles)

I just insured my 110 Puma Utility with NFU - despite multiple cheaper quotes I keep reading positive reviews on customer service etc in the event of a claim (obviously, we all hope to never need to use our car insurance).

I was surprised no reduction for a tracker - did others get reductions for professionally installed and monitored trackers?

Tony, thatcham have recently changed their security items. Lots of approved items are now disapproved.

Trackers category have been decimated down to cat5A and cat 7S.

Disklok are also now outside thatcham approval.

I believe that insurers are to honor current trackers installed before January of 2019. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

These insurance companies will do anything to get out of paying... I have told them everything I know about on my defender, even made changes half way through my policy because I found something a previous owner fitted that I wasn't aware of.

All we can do is be honest, and then on top of that do everything we can to protect our belongings.

UP ALL YOUR SECURITY! then add more, then when you can afford it, add some more.

I will never stop adding security, although im running out of things to add... My next lot will be to secure my driveway. Regards
Adam

If you have a specific modified policy then minor changes (non performance) shouldn't have much of an impact either way. However if you have a standard policy then add mods then you may find a standard insurer will add premium for cover.

A note on mentioned above with a well known company charging extra... as far as I'm aware they are one of the standard insurers who cover modified vehicle but do not offer cover for the mods themselves - so in a claim mods are excluded. This may have changed but it is worth asking the question to your insurer " you are covering my modified vehicle but are you actually covering my mods?" because customers have come to us after being stung in a claim payout where their £5k worth of mods were not covered although declared.

If you have modifications it's usually worth seeking specific modified insurance via a broker as it's usually better cover and better on the wallet too... welcome to give us a try if you do need a quote as we support the members and I am here for support also but no pressure, just here to help!
