bench seats ?
Planning what to do with the utility part at the back on the landy. I think I would like a couple of bench seats either side so i can load stuff on them.

Are they expensive to buy and how dot hey fix to the truck, some sort of fixing kit needed?

Talk to Exmoor trim - they make replacements. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
+ New Defender 110 First Edition

There was one in the back of my 90 when I bought it (but no seat belts), just two bolts through the wheel arch with some large washers underneath. the seat back has two plates that just fit into the slots on the inside of the body capping rail.

Which is pretty much the same way the (individual) seats were factory fitted in my old County Station Wagon. It's only the seat belt mounts that were fitted to shaped spreader plates that were bolted through the wheel arch to plates below and rivetted to the body side (not sure what that contributed though)?

And yes they can be bought from Exmoor Trim stockists, starting at about £75 (powder coated frame, cushions in vinyl) but are also available with galvanised frames, cloth upholstery etc etc MAD COW

Are the bench seats you buy off Exmoor trim able to be fitted using the fittings in place for the current Puma seats?

Sorry if this seems pretty obvious - quite a newbie to this all!

POM you can get them cheaper through the Series2club forum, maybe £30 for both or Blanchards etc etc second-hand but Exmoor Trim one's can be got from Craddocks, Britpart do them I think from Paddocks.

I'm not sure how legal they would be. If anyone is sitting in them you need the forwards facing seats with a 3 point harness - also made by Exmoor Trim but then you would fit the Puma ones anyway Thumbs Up

The bench seats just bolt through, they went up to 02 or 05 on the TD5 model!

As Spud says, if you intend carrying humans then its both illegal and your insurance would be void, if is not on public highway or you are using them for goods, than you can do what ever you want Shocked

It wasn't deemed safe enough to be sitting sideways on to a collision especially with just a lap belt on. New regulations came into force quite a while ago hence the replacement of bench seats that sit along the side, with forward facing seats and three point harnesses in mini-buses, Defenders etc Thumbs Up

So does this mean anyone with an old Defender that has the sideways facing seats is carrying passengers illegally?

Law varys according to the year of original registration in the UK (as indeed do MOT requirements), for example I don't have to have seat belts in my Series 1 (or wear any) as it did not have them fitted at the time of manufacture.

Its a similar situation with seating, its now no longer legal to fit sideways facing seats on new motors such as the Defender, in addition to risking being pulled over by the fuzz (rather unlikely I would imagine) you would find your insurance is invalid in the event of an accident, even if it was not your fault Shocked

Heres an extract of the legal blurb:

The prohibition on the fitment of side facing seats applies to all motor vehicles, with the following exceptions:

M2 and M3 category vehicles of Classes I, II or A (i.e. buses and coaches with provisions for standing passengers).

Ambulances and vehicles intended for use by the armed services, civil defence and fire services.

M3 category vehicles of Class B (i.e. buses and coaches without provisions for standing passengers), having a gross vehicle weight greater than 10,000 kg. However, side facing seats are only permitted in these vehicles if they are grouped together at the rear of the vehicle to form an integrated saloon of up to 10 seats.

This exemption is only available until 20/10/10, although this time limit may be extended, pending a review of accident statistics.

The other changes included in these amending Directives are the removal of the exemptions for folding seats and the introduction of specific clauses to exempt restraint systems intended solely for use of disabled people.

The implementation dates for these new Directives are as follows:
20/10/06 for all new types of vehicle, and 20/10/07 for all new vehicles.

As Kez says, not if they were fitted originally as new but you cannot put small children in those seats. In the UK they have to be in forward racing seats in a child or booster seat!

It's the reason why the old 11 seater TDi's remain in high demand as well as the TD5 90 for instance with has 4 side facing seats. Losing the boot space and two seats (going from 4 to 2!) on a 90 TDCi was never going to be good news for sales Sad
