I've "upgraded" and moved some switches from the right hand side of the steering wheel namely the hazard, fog and rear heater to the centre where the rear wipe switch is. All went ok and is working.
However the binnacle hazard warning light does not flash when the hazards are on. The new Carling switch flashes fine. To be honest I don't know if the binnacle light (Mine are all factory LED lights) has ever worked. Should it come on when the ignition is first switched like a lot of the other lights do, engine light, diesel filter etc? Mine doesn't. Thanks in advance Mike Hard Top 90 TD5 2001 Ford 100e 1959 www.youtube.com/mikemakesit |

Is the black with red wire from the warning light connected to anything?
This is the diagram of the early Td5 switch (same as Tdi): https://www.defender2.net/forum/post751808.html#751808 Does the Carling switch have enough poles to connect this up? 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

The Carling switch does not have a suitable connection for the binnacle 'tell-tale' lamp. There is no requirement for it as the Carling light now flashes.
As Martin says, when you wired up the Carling switch you would have had a black/red wire left over which drives the binnacle tell-tale. If you want it working still you will need a relay with pins 86 and 30 connected to the right and left indicators accordingly, pin 85 to ground and pin 87 to the telltale. Ahhh a nice mechanical AND gate
If you do this you don't need a great big automotive relay, a tiny one will do - just make sure it has a 12V coil. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Thanks Guys for the info, I'll look into this at the weekend. So I'm guessing the hazard binnacle LED's would have lit before I did the rewire? Remember I have a factory fitted LED SMD unit. all the info I can find seems to related to filament bulbs. Probably won't make a difference though, just saying Thanks again Mike

There’s no hazard warning lamp on the pre-Td5 panel, it’s built into the switch 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Paul, that's what I have. I just don't remember if the hazard symbol lit in the binnacle or not before my re-wire! It's fine on the new switch and it does have a spare terminal I'm going to look at. As I say I have the "new" style SMD led panel/binnacle. I'll investigate further as I would like it to light in the binnacle is possible. Mike

On the old style hazard switch (pre-TD5), the Black/Red wire for the switch's flashing tell-tale light comes from one of the switch connector terminals, and loops back to a 4.8mm male terminal on the side of the switch for the tell-tale bulb (there's a corresponding earth terminal on the other side of the switch).
On the early TD5 (1999-2001) the hazard switch and its wiring is the same as the earlier vehicles, but there's an additional Black/Red wire from the switch connector terminal, which goes up the instrument warning lights for the flashing triangle symbol. The Carling hazard switch (from MUD Stuff) doesn't have a dedicated output for the warning light, as it's integral to the switch. You could do as suggested earlier, and use a relay to provide the feed to the instrument warning light. Or, you could open-up the Carling switch and solder a wire to the switch's warning light contact. Paul. 1989 Arles Blue 2.5TD 110 Hardtop 1999 Epsom Green Discovery II 4.0 V8i 'XS' |

Unfortunately it isnt quite as simple as connecting into the Carling switch. The illumination on the carling switch is a single LED which does both the backlight and tell-tale using a resistor and diode.

This is where I moved the 3 switches. The rear demister, hazard and rear fog. I also took the time to add a few extras in place of the 2 cup holders. I need my tea so added a MUD tray around the gear levers! Last year I added 3mm chequer plate to the inside and a useful storage box.
