Rear wheel/axle drumming noise?

Hi all,

So I’ve given myself a new noise to worry about. After changing the brake pads last weekend, I swapped the front and rear wheels over too, same sides though, front to rear only. And I gave rear prop uj’s a good squirt with the grease gun.

But now I’ve got a loud rhythmic drumming noise when I get over about 60mph. Definitely from the rear axle area. I can’t for the life of me work out what it is. The uj’s don’t appear worn and the tyres have equal tread on both sides.

I’d be very grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction. This is on a 2012 110 SW btw.

First call would be to swap the wheels back and see if it stops.

2011 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Galway Green

I had what I thought was a rear diff rumble (tyres had 25k on them and had not been swapped about) , swapped the tyres about and the noise all but disappeared!! DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I thought I’d have to give that a go. Swapped tyres on other vehicles before and never had this, but definitely worth a try this weekend.

Yep, that fixed it. Annoyingly. I thought I might be able to wear the tyres out evenly, but the fronts must be too far gone in comparison to the rears. Ah well.

The noise won't be detrimental to anything but your sanity. At least its an easy fix
