I fitted one a couple of days ago without any issues.
As stated make sure the wheel is perfectly straight before you start. First crack off the big nut on your wheel 2 turns then rock your wheel side to side whilst pulling on it to break it free from the spline. Remove the wheel nut and washer then slowly remove your wheel making sure you do not turn it whilst removing. Fitting the new boss make sure it is aligned for the straight ahead position you will see the slots in it where it aligns. Look at your old wheel boss if you require confirmation. The QR boss should slide onto the spines without any resistance you will see the QR boss will be very snug against the steering column covers when in position. I think fitting the QR boss without the wheel gives you more control aligning the splines correctly and less chance of disturbing the sensors. Refit your washer and locknut then install your wheel to the boss. I have done this job twice now on MY2015 without any problems. 2016 Defender Landmark 90 2005 Defender CSW TD5 90XS |

Hello discomog
This was fitting a Snap On QR Boss not Optimill but the principle is the same. My Defender had the Startech Steering Wheel and replacement fixed Boss fitted prior to my ownership, I added the QR Mechanism (silver bit) and Boss (Al' Leather bit). The fixed Boss was on really tight, so needed a puller to get it off...however here's the advice I used a centre punch to mark the absolute top dead centre spline on the steering column (with the wheels in a straight line) to try and ensure that when I swapped over to the new Boss I stood a fair chance of having the Steering Wheel correctly aligned when clicked back on...I figured that if done carefully I would probably be within 1 spline out either way. It worked first time, I then marked up the Boss also so there is never an issue realigning it to the steering column (it's been off several times to deal with other stuff ) I drove a Defender recently that had the Optimill set up (including the Boss Lock) all looked to be very nicely produced and if I didn't have my set up I'd definitely be happy with this alternative. I have made a custom Boss lock as Snap On don't do one. IMO a QR Steering Wheel is in the top 3 if not higher security layers for our Defenders. Somebody in the past must have been over enthusiastic making up the 22mm nut when they fitted the Startech. 2016 Defender Landmark 90

I have messed it up twice and upset the steering angle sensor! Basically when you drive down the road the abs will kick in for a few seconds around 20mph every time you start off. Main dealer recalibrated it for me FOC though on both occasions. Andy

Thanks guys, I feel a lot more confident now. I didn't fancy a 60 mile round trip to my local dealer to have the steering angle sensor reset. Defender 90XS SW
