The Td5 speed transducer feeds the speedometer which then modifies the signal frequency to feed to the ECU. There is no other communication between the two (other than the immobiliser lamp). The mileage etc is all stored within the speedo.

Td5 fuel gauge works fine on my 90 using the underseat tank and original Tdi sender. It's not linear, but this is by design. It is however reliably repeatable so works well in that respect.
Wiring via the speedo head for damping. |

I've got twin tanks on my 90 (original side tank and Td5 rear tank). The rear tank sender goes through the speedo to the gauge for normal use. I've got a changeover switch which flips the feed to the gauge to the side tank sender, this gives me a quick look at the level in the side tank. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

As an intermediate measure until i get chance to make something a little more fancy with PWM control I have used a VDO 1/8NPT sender (direct swap with green/black top) and a 100ohm variable resistor for calibrating (set at 47ohms which is what i calculated it needed to be anyway) these are the gauge positions when tested yesterday on my V8. Temps measured via ECU/rovergauge and confirmed by the cut in/out of the 2speed electric fans:
Click image to enlarge Only issue is that it doesnt quite make it to the full hot position. From my calculation it will sit at the white line just before the red region at 120°C. Much happier that the gauge now provides a true and 'real-time' indication of what the engine temps are doing. Also anything over half means i need to start worrying. This is a helpful thread.
I have a 2002 300tdi defender. I got it without the coolant gauge working... i tried to change the temp sender (black ring)... and it barely moves. It seems from my research that i should be using the green one not the black one. My question is does my speedometer have to be working for the coolant gauge to work properly? my speedometer is currently not hooked up. |

Yes, on a ROW 300 Tdi, the signal from the temperature sender to the gauge passes through a resistor on the speedo circuit board.
