I was thinking the same after reading the steering wheel thread in the "General" section.
I am quite happy with the standard wheel and currently depend on a disc lock. It would be better to be able to remove it easily. I am not keen on the expense of another wheel. Keith |

I can’t see any way of making original wheel quick release other than undo nut in middle and to not over tighten when fitting.

You would only have to put a pair of mole grips on to steer it though.

much like the OP I'm loathe to buy a new steering wheel, the original one is perfectly fine and looks just how it's supposed to.
The closest to original is the Staratech which is over £400 ! that's just a rip off |

I think the only way to fit a standard wheel on a QR boss would involve machining the wheel to mount it on an after-market-style boss. This might be possible if the armature of the wheel is both large enough and of a suitable material to (a) allow machining and (b) be drilled and tapped to screw the boss onto the back of the wheel.
Overall it would be a complex job and the result, if possible at all, would always leave you wondering if the wheel was about to break free of the boss. Perhaps a steering wheel manufacturer could be persuaded to make aftermarket removable wheels that are otherwise identical to the standard types. It might be a very limited market though, since most people change their wheel because they want a nicer one, not an identical one! It would, I suppose, be possible to make a two part QR boss that mounts a standard wheel, but it would necessarily be considerably thicker than normal QR bosses (since the spike to mount the wheel on would have to sit clear of the original spike). If you used an ultra-thin lower part (such as the Optimill one) you could probably achieve and overall result similar to the thick boss adaptors that cheaper QR units need. It would probably move the wheel about 4 or 5 inches hearer to the driver. As far as I know, nobody has a product to accommodate this very niche market. |

Just splurged on a Momo 14", Optimill quick release, Optimill lock and Optimill lock keeper.
The way i see it, i'd rather be £500 poorer now than a Defender 90 poorer forever! if that makes sense. Oh and whatever to the original wheel, The paranoia of parking it up places just got too much mostly due to my lack of confidence in my existing security measures. |

Appears that fitting to a later vehicle involves lot of sensors or things that can go wrong , such as going into Limp Mode ,Losing the steering and becoming very familiar with a hedge
Conversation with Optimil was very interesting but a little scary. I think I will leave to a professional to fit it 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue 1967 Morris Traveller 1966 Morris Convertible 2012 VW T5 Camper Quod Abundat Non Obstat. |
