Late ones are good cars, transmissions are fine! Lot of car for not much money, autos a bit gutless by modern standards but do the job. Engines are great (BMW lump)
Check for water ingress into the locker in the boot (should have a small sub if HSE), other than that normal used car checks. Only slight downside is seats aren’t height adjustable and quite high. |

I loved mine. I've been looking around for one myself for the same reason (but with a lot less budget sadly). I'm tempted by a Kv6 3dr or a TD4 auto 3dr. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

I had one as my first “landrover” product and really liked it, more fun to drive than a fiesta I would imagine too 2015 HT XS 90

Looking about there are a few to be found for less than £3.5k (under 100k). Looks like the auto version has a £500+ RFL compared to the five speed (£315)
Another downside is the insurance group is higher which would add another £100 a year to the running costs compared to a fiesta.........maybe not then....... 2010 XS USW 1957 Series One 88 diesel 1958 Series One 88 4x2 |

How much grief do you want in your life?
I figure you already have at least 2 LandRovers (Def and S1), so don't really need anymore. A similar priced fiesta will be cheaper to run, repair, faster, more comfortable and more reliable. A car that just does it's job without fuss or trouble, though slightly boring, is very under rated. |

I owned a Freelander 1 with the BMW engine for several years, the most reliable Land Rover I have owned, never missed a beat, never let me down and they don’t rust.

Got my first one in 2002 as a company car which I bought at the end of the 3 year lease with 52k miles on it. Kept it until it was 12 years old & had 195k miles on it - still had the original clutch in it & driveline all OK. It only went as it got written off by a taxi that drove into it! Yes, it did leak initially, the seal around the rear door, but there was a modified seal that cured that. Had discs on the front a couple of times, a set of glow plugs, an alternator & a radiator but aside from that all it ever needed was normal servicing. It was a Td4 manual, 3 door hardback. Replaced it with a later version of the same car which was kept for 4 years before being replaced by a FL2 Td4. Usual stuff applies, get one with a good service history.

I currently have a 54 plate td4 HSE, bought in haste, it's known as 'shonky'. Because it is. Will be going cheap in a couple of months.

I think on reflection and as pointed out by DCS - Off I probably don't need the potential grief. I think the deciding factor has been the fact it will cost more to tax a year than my 110 usw and for a second car thats not tolerable really. 2010 XS USW

I have a freelander 2 TD4 as a motorway mile muncher
220,000 miles on it and all I've done is consumables and tyres thats it! nothing wrong with it at all. I miss the heated screen and seats of the 110 XS but it does the job bloody well and I got 680 miles to a tank last week! 110 barely gets 380 lol. Plenty of poke, quiet and comfortable, will cruise 110mph easily on the autobahns 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold) 2015 Discovery 4.5 Black pack Firenze red XS 2008 Corris Grey 110 XS USW (sold) 2011 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold) |

I have been here before thinking I could get a cheap land rover like an old discovery or freelander as a second car but always decided against it due to tax, insurance and the fact you will no doubt still want to find things to bolt onto it as it's a land rover!
A car that does the job in the end does just that is really what you want/need as a runabout, which is why I ended up with a Citroen c1! It does what it says on the tin and very cheap to run A fiesta will be similar but a bit better. Last edited by Mike c on 20th Jan 2019 3:01pm. Edited 1 time in total |

When I worked at the South East Land Rover Experience we had td4 Auto Freelander 1s with the BMW lump.
They were stunning off road to drive with "road" tryes. Providing ground clearance was never an issue, I preferred the Freelander 1 to to the Discovery 2s! We had so much fun with them. The only problems we had was mud blocking the rads and then the occasional injector failing at £250ish a pop. Cheers Don. |
