on start up the oil light stays on for a few seconds from cold , ok when hot , anyone got a idea why ?

Cheap oil filter with no non return valve ? Wrong grade oil - too thin ? Goosed oil pump ?

Replace the sender unit, cheap as chips, bet it cures it! 'Volvo XC 70, taking the rough with the smooth’

Sounds like it could be the sender,probably the cheapest part to change first!

Not sure about the Puma motor but on a 300Tdi, the oil light being on is to indicate that the sender is f*ed, about 999 times out of 1000. I have replaced at least a dozen senders on various vehicles I have owned, they went through a particularly bad patch in the early 2000s where every time the sender got wet, it would let water in and kept the light on, I think I probably had 4 or 5 in the space of a year. Definitely worth changing before looking any further. ---

Check the dipstick tube hasn't moved when I had a 200tdi, had the oil light come on at tickover, turn out the dipstick tube had been pushed down furhter into the engine, hence dipstick level was correct, but actually engine oile level was low.
