I wouldnt run a mile if you find an exceptional 10p td5 over a 15p. You'll see plenty of older non facelift d2's driving with 10p engines and plenty of old defenders. Of course a 15p would be preferred with the updated dash, rear door and engine etc but I found mine (2001 10p) with 34k miles on it in mint condition 2 and a half years ago so i took the risk and have been problem free. I have changed the oil pump sprocket bolt as a precaution as i know some of the early td5's didnt have enough loctite on them. Its not a hard job and may save your engine in the future.
If you follow tirsbaek tv on youtube you'll see that he drives an early 10p td5 which is remapped anda high mileage example and as far as hes shown hes had no real engine disasters. Also remember that not all 15p's are immune to damaged heads and head float because of plastic dowels, grafty's one if i remember rightly was a 15p with plastic dowels. And i remember seeing a 2004 in the for sale section with an amc head at 85k miles so i assume that suffered with a similar problem at some stage. Its all just a bit of luck |

I've done ~10,000 miles on my 10p Stage 2 TD5, only thing that has failed is the rocker shaft which was £40 for a second hand replacement. But I had noises from it before the remap so it was likely unrelated.
If you experience a TD5 with a stage 2 remap, you will never want to own a 300tdi. Ever. Having said that, there is a conversion kit for the 300tdi to make it a 2.8ltr, combine that with an upgraded turbo |

I have had both 300tdi and Td5 defenders and as much as I loved the simplicity of a 300tdi it would be Td5 all the way now. The Td5 body and trim doesn't really have anything better than the 300, yes the post 2002 is a big improvement but can be retrofitted to older models. Where the Td5 scores is the engine which as is well known is highly tuneable, but all that aside it is a nicer more refined engine to live with daily. Maintenance is no harder than a 300, but parts are inherently more expensive.

I had a CT 300tdi Disco and now have a 90 td5 15p. Both are good engines but I prefer the td5. Off-road the td5 will stall if you just touch the throttle but with no feet on any pedals it beats the 300 tdi.
I wouldn't worry about the oilpump or plastic head positioning pins as they are probably fixed or do you think they will stiil give a problem after more then 15 years? I have heard about oil in the engine loom, Would that be fixed now? also do these have a separate water pump like the 300s? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

The oil in loom has developed as a fault and been sorted or sorted by knowing about it before it was a problem. It’s easily checked whilst checking over prepurchase, just pull the plug off the underseat ECU.
Another thing to check that is easy is to prime the fuel pump. Ignition on then press Acc pedal ten times and listen for it to be too loud. It should be audible outside the vehicle, but no overly, and no noise when your inside. Andy. |

The injector loom seems to now be classed as a service part as it will eventually start to have oil ingress, you can do many miles before this happens and if you do a few minutes prep work on the new one it should just about stop it from happening.
It’s a different engine with a few more parts than a tdi but still fixable on a drive, I’ve done some of the common issues and if you struggle there’s loads of help around. Between 80 an 150k km, Td5 specific issues that our 110 manifested were:
- warped exhaust manifold when bought (80k) - oil in injector wiring loom - worn injector rocker roller, probably due to poor servicing by the previous owner. Also when bought (80k) - dead injector (quite rare apparently) (126k) - worn BBUS battery pack - MAF sensor (139k) - injector O rings and copper rings (sorry, forgot the proper name) more general wear: - brakes (85k) - rear dampers (115k) - rear halfshafts and drive members (80k) - rebuilt hubs and brake calipers with stainless pistons (90k), replaced 1 stub axle - new master + slave clutch cylinder - 1 swivel ball gasket - PAS pump (125k) - rebuilt FPR - 1 track rod end - wiper drive cable broken/worn out drive sprockets (140k) Again: distances are kilometers, not miles. I had oil in the loom, and subsequently ruined my ecu... But I fitted a new loom, and they are sealed, so I wont happen again. - and it was a great excuse to the wife to spend some more money on it!! The army did this to the frontline R/ wmik+ alongside blindos and an ZF auto with the intention of keeping them in service longer. It had the opposite effect, engines and gearboxes kept overheating and banjaxxing where they were going out of service quicker than they could bring them in... I always thought that the oil seeped along the loom between the strands of wire, and that there was no way of stopping it, instead just treating the loom as a service item? '99 TD5 Defender 90 '52 Series 1 80" '99 Caterham 7 |

The new looms are 'sealed' apparently (genuine Land Rover). Or so that's what I have been told...
