Yes you need them. They are more important than axle ones in my opinion.
Are you sure you don’t have them fitted? They are normally run up to the back of the engine, in front of the bulkhead. |

Your gearbox breather is quite close to the bell housing on the top. It is about 10inches long and goes from the gearbox into the bell housing. So unless you plan on being submerged for extended periods of time (long enough for the bell housing to fill up with water) I wouldn’t see the point in extending that one.
And the transfer box one should terminate in the engine bay near the top of the bulkhead/bonnet join. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html Instagram - @r22oyp Roy |

Hi arran
I have found the G box breather to be a thread of M14 X 1 which is a slightly odd thread. From my topic G Box breather Thread I haven't got any further in sorting mine out in finding a bung or a way of tapping a blank to take a conventional breather a la like the axles IMHO the bell housing isn't sealed and so I would suggest a breather to stop any water ingestion. you don't plan to be up to your dingle berries in water, but knowing that the only issue driving home is soggy undercrackers is better than mass bearing failure. Whilst your in there I would then route a breather to deal with the Fuel tank as the one way valve has been known to fail in the past. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest |

Just up to the sills in water..the brethers wouldnt have to work i guess.
But if its over the sills thats when i would need to gearbox breathers to start working i assume!?? |

Is your snorkel sealed all the way through to the airbox or is it just bolted on the wing and using the standard pipework?
If not, you might have more than your breathers to worry about if venturing into deep water. |

Snorkal is sealed properly to the bodywork but i think its still normal pipework in the engine side plus the airbox isnt sealed i dont think,
But if i was only going it sill deep water i guess i wouldnt have to worry about the breathers as it wont be deep enough anyway |

Yes, the Snorkel and ALL pipework needs sealing right up. Mine is, but not the airbox drain at the bottom for a reason in normal use.
If it was needed that'd need sealing too but I'm never going to go as deep as that but like the fact it's nearly all sealed u and would be if I decided to seal that drain too. It also stops the intake drawing in warm and dirty air though all sorts of I certainly wouldn't advise going deeper than sills either you also have a lot of electrics to deal with in seat boxes for example. In an ideal world you would want HD DM flanges that are sealed also, or at least 1piece on the rear and HD front. If you don't they'll need well greasing and water can get in and cause the dreaded 'fretting' and then prop UJ's need greasing etc. You probably know this anyway but as you've probably guess lost things leak like a sieve. Some things for good reason, others not so good if H2O gets in it. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

I've had water up to the external door handles on my Puma and no water entered the gearbox (the back axle was a different story). It wasn't a good idea really and I don't recommend it, the back end was starting to lift and if the flow had been faster I would have had to open a door and flood the cab. It took an age to dry the carpets!
The full details of the standard breather are in my post on the other thead, and if you do want to extend the breather then I suggest either tapping the M14 fitting's centre hole for 1/8 BSP, or easier still take the existing plastic push-fit elbow and fit it to a new pipe. Be advised that it is exceptionally difficult to refit the M14 fitting in the box once you have removed it due to the large diameter extremely fine thread and the irregular shape of the top of the box. It is highly likely that you'll cross-thread it. M14x1 is a standard thread, however. |

When I researched M14 x 1 for a standard bung / plug with a view to drill and tap an 90 degree elbow pneumatic fitting the response was sparse. Lot's of M14 X 1.5 though. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

Why not machine the standard Getrag fitting?
