If it was me, I’d have the head checked for cracks etc and have the valves and guides checked and rectified as required while the head is off. There seems to me to be to much build up in the various ports.
It will be a case of spend now and save later on. |

I've never taken off a head gasket in my life and that doesn't look right to me. Not that that's of any use to you Monsieur Le Grenadier

The heads off now, I have checked for cracks on the face especially in between valves. It's perfect.
I'm thinking of handing it over to be cleaned, I shall check for warping but do you think I should have it skimmed as a matter of course? Could I be right in saying that if the turbo seals were to leak its passing oil into the intake. It was boosting well and no blue smoke present though?? Our dad seems to think valve stem seal? Was a cold and wet day for a cylinder head removal I can tell you!! |

That looks like oil coming up the head bolt to me. Common on 300’s I can’t remember exactly which one is worse but it’s definitelty front turbo side. A bit of sealant on the bolt when it goes back will cure it

Have you ever cleaned the cyclone oil separator or flushed the intercooler?

Bit of progress today chaps, had a straight edge across and couldn’t get any of the feelers underneath. No cracks or damage and valves held wd overnight. Everything else look ok? |

Looks good. Worth doing the valve stem oil seals while the head is on the bench. Simple job, though you’ll need some method of compressing the valve springs.

Was your inlet / exhaust gasket cracked? Looks very much like it's on the way out (read gone). Chepa enough to replace, did mine recently with genuine and was £30 for the gasket. If you need studs / bolts I've got bags of genuine ones because I couldn't get them at my local fastner place and LR could only get them in bags. Ironically didn't damage a single one doing it, oh well 1 bolt used from the 70 quids worth!
Might be worth checking your exhaust manifold is not warped as well. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

It all started from an oil leak I couldn’t trace. Was running down the block from the top of the head, thats when i went for a whole top end gasket set. It needed a timing belt anyway and also wanted to change the p gasket as a matter of course.
I have a new inlet/exhaust gasket to go on, will also be checking breather system and looking into oil creeping up the head bolts. With the valve seals that just a case of pulling old out and squarely tapping the new in? |
