English drivers are lazy and selfish. The easiest thing to do is sit in middle, second lane and just drive At chosen speed. That way you can do what ever you want.

Well the law in the UK is quite clear. Drive on the left hand side of the road unless overtaking.
Rule 264 of the Highway Code states: “You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slow-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.” Now on a 3 lane motorway vehicles towing are not permitted in lane 3/outside lane. When towing not permitted in lane 3 and restricted to 60mph. Come across an ignorant middle lane hogger doing 50-55mph , not permitted to undertake, not permitted to overtake, not permitted to tailgate etc. Yes they are a pain in the proverbial! Brendan |

What I have is a road called the A19, and I tell you what, I have had to undertake most of the traffic, as they all seem to pull on to the right hand lane and just hog it. one time I just did the proper speed limit and under took everyone right up to the junction i was turning off. Another pet hate is people doing lane jumps from the very far end lane right into the left hand lane at the last min, which nearly causes a crash. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

You are not "undertaking" unless you change lanes to pass them. If you are in the left hand lane doing any speed up to the speed limit, and middle lane traffic are moving more slowly you are perfectly entitled to pass on the left so long as you do not change lanes to do so. In any event "no undertaking" is not really enforced is it, as the police would know its 99% of the time due to idiots in the middle lane.
Think about it. In a traffic jam does everyone wait for traffic to their right to move off first? 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

Highway Code 268 says it is permissable in congested conditions.
Middle lane hoggers operate in non congested system. Now when towing have I accidentally caught the top light bar switch when behind middle lane hogged? ![]() Brendan |

In my last speed awareness course the instructor said there was no such thing as the "fast lane" or "overtaking lane" it was just lane 1 and lane 2. I thought the highway code must have been changed?
It certainly seems when I drive on motorways particularly there is no such thing as lane discipline. Every jumps in middle or outer lane and stays there. It's frequently far quicker to stay in slow lane and undertake everyone. People's faces when they get undertaken by a Defender ![]() MY2012 110 2.2TDCi XS SW Orkney Grey - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic43410.html MY1990 110 200TDi SW beautifully faded Portofino Red - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post743641.html#743641 MY1984 90 V8 Slate Grey - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post744557.html#744557 Instagram @suffolk_rovers |

I'd argue they are in fact causing congestion. Let's face it you are highly unlikely to face any kind of legal action for passing them. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

It's been lane 1,2,3 certainly as long as I have been driving (coming up to 20 years soon) never seen them officially named fast, slow etc, I suspect they never were and it's just a myth. Lanes 2 & 3 are technically overtaking lanes though if you think about it, but they are not running lanes which is why hoggers are a problem. That said if the hoggers actually drove at the limit they would be much less of a problem, but usually they are doing around 50-55 I find. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

Today’s police and road craft is a joke in the UK - not enough police and the few police we have can’t be bothered
Even the hi tech cameras on the M25 have an unbelievable amount of manual intervention to get the tickets out |

So what will happen when / if all new cars are fitted with speed limiters ?
TBH if the conditions are good I just sit in the the inside lane and I into moats others in the outer lane so be it If I got a ticket ( unlikely I think ) then so be it ![]() |

I see it a fair bit when I’m out in my horse lorry. I’ll sit at around 55mph maybe 60 and there’s no way I’m slowing down just because there’s an idiot sat in the middle lane. Takes me long enough to get my speed up in it as it so I pass them in lane 1.
I’ve often done it in my car too - my argument is that I’ve got to go from lane 1 to lane 3 back to 1 just because someone can’t use the roads properly. I’m safer just undertaking them with caution |
