Makes no sense having an AT tyre for road use: longer breaking distance, more prone to aquaplaning and less compliant handling. Take a look at the AutoBlid test and it’s hard to justify AT tyres in any road situation at all.

Conversely I’ve found no appreciable difference in noise or fuel consumption between road tyres and ATs, so I have the latter as they last longer and work better when I do venture off road. As long as you drive it like a Land Rover and not a sports car the slight reduction in handling/grip is not noticeable.

Surprisingly the AT treads are apparently quiet in comparison to highway tyres in the German test. I dont notice any difference between my for winter road ones and thr BFG AT i run in summer/off roading in that repect. I think it doesnt matter in a Defender!
Have noticed mpg difference but i dropped from 265 to 235 so not a direct comparison. Wet cold braking though its a massive difference, the german test showed AT take 20mtrs extra to stop, which could be difference between life and death. I know my BFG are getting on a bit but for me it feels like they would take 40mtrs more over the HTS60 i’m running now. |

There is no valid reason for fitting AT's if you are 99% highway, of which 20% is motorway, due in the main to lower braking performance. There are plenty of road tyres manufactured for light trucks/SUV's, the General Grabber HTS being a good example as mentioned above. Defender 90XS SW

Michelin Latitude Cross (supplied as original equipment on some Defenders, mine included) are a good tyre, and surprisingly good off road too.
An oldie but a goodie, still available. |

A friend has Michelin latitude an swears by them, especially in snow. He has been driving land rovers for lots of years and thinks they are the best tyres he has ever had in terms of overall performance.
I have a set of their predecessors Michelin XPC on standard Land Rover steel wheels and they offer good grip on both wet and dry tarmac, they are also suitable for the small amount of off road work I do these days. It is possible to corner on them hard enough to make them howl, in a 110. Oh and they seem to last for ages. |

I recently swapped Avon Rangemaster 7.5R16s for BFG AT K02 235/85/16s. They're great. noticeably quieter than the rangemasters on road, and slightly better mpg as well. I'm happy with them on road and off; and they're snow marked. 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent |

thanks for all your replies much to think about but I do like the sound of the latitude cross, sounds like what I need unless someone has had them before and not been happy with them ?
