Pilot bearing can brake during gearbox removal or installation. I believe the cage is made of plastic. As for fixing the tip of the shaft I cannot help. Puma 110" SW

I’ve just replaced mine with a new genuine one. Wasn’t anything wrong with it but while I hade the box off to do the clutch it made sense to change it.
A relatively simple process which could be done in an afternoon if you had the right tools and access. I’d stick with what was originally fitted and just ensure it’s greased properly upon fitment with the correct high temperature grease. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html Instagram - @r22oyp Roy |

I always replace them with LUK or genuine- and yes nearly everytime you remove a box a roller falls out! The special tool from Land Rover is about £80 and worth the money!

I just used an internal bearing puller. The whole set cost about £35 on eBay. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html
