Judder in 5th and 6th
Hey all, Ive been experiencing a weird Judder only in 5th and 6th gear and only when accelerating up hill Confused

Ive checked all UJ's and flanges, they all appear to be very sturdy and well greased, I re-greased them while i was there any way.

Wheel bearing are fine as i have checked them too.

The judder/vibration is felt through the whole cab rather than just the steering wheel.

Im about to go and take the hand brake cover off and inspect in there for any binding.

Any pointers to what it could be?

Thanks

This probably isn't the news you're looking for.....

Do you get something similar sometimes when pulling away?

I have noticed something similar recently - a quiet slow wobble and I suspect is could be gearbox / extension shaft but most likely friction plate related?

Feels to me like the extension shaft is isolating?

Good luck.

Nope pulling away is fine. Unless I'm not noticing it. It's very noticeable when it happens as it feels and sounds like something is massively vibrating in the drive line.

I originally thought it would be a UJ but I've shock them very vigorously and I could see any movement.

Accelerating down hill is fine. Just up hill when there is more strain applied.

Is it low rpm 5th and 6th ? If so when the revs climb does the vibration stop or get less ?

I my experience, sometimes UJ wear cant be detected unless you unbolt the propshaft.

Good luck Roy.

Not the same issue as me. Mine is a silent and only slight wobble under load.

Relatively low and when the revs climb I feel the vibrations climb too. I've just had a look underneath after giving it a run up and down the motorway do a couple miles. The only thing I can see underneath is when I shake the rear prop the whole gearbox moves up and down. Should the mounting bushes be this soft?

Thanks for Your help so far

no solution yet, and also as the truck is in the wife's hand for the next 2 months while I'm away, no doubt there will be more problems upon my return Rolling with laughter

resurrecting my old thread, I have been living with this judder for a while now!!

Finally had enough of adjusting my driving style around the rev range!

New clutch, release bearing and adaptor shaft fitted at the weekend and the vibration is GONE!!!! Bow down

Just incase anyone has the same problem in the future and finds this thread, always nice to have a solution to the problem listed! 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

My 2009 DCPU does the same, under acceleration or high throttle going up hill in 5th and 6th (although 5th seems to have less vibrations) it also groans a little. Interestingly the same hill on the way home i experience the issues on regularly with a minidigger, 3 buckets, and triple axle trailer on tow in 4th has no such vibration

We rebuilt transfer case with ATB and the input shaft changed to an ashcroft kit and it made no difference although that was not why we did the work. When we removed the box, springs and friction plate looked fine although i have my doubts on the quality of the clutch fitted (original LR with 30k on it) as has been documented many times on the forum.

All joints, shafts, mounts are ok, I put it down to the amount of torque being produced (car is remapped, bigger intercooler etc.). Adjusted driving style to reduce the occurrence but it would still be good to know what it could be and get it fixed.

Did you take the clutch pressure plate off?

The actual clutch face on mine looked fine, but once removed it was like a tambourine!! the damping springs were shagged and almost to the point of falling out the friction plate. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Haha it’s lasted over 2 years with the vibration but not sure how much longer it would have lasted.
