Recovery Points - what do you mean there's none?
I've got a 90 Station Wagon and want to avoid fitting any towbar (we also have a Discovery which is great for towing and I've no intention of fitting a mineplough to the Defender) however from numerous posts I see this is an issue. I need recovery points front and rear, and only require them for recovery, not for towing anything. In due course I may fit a winch etc... to the front but have no spare cash at the moment.

I've decided to fit some D-rings to the front bumper:

Then a 5T dixon-bate tow jaw to the rear cross member:

Does this sound viable, and does anyone know the size of bolts required to fit the rear tow-jaw as I see the six holes in the cross member are already threaded?

Cheers,

They should do the job for recovery, they seem pretty solid. I would email them and ask about the rating on those D-rings though.

You could go for the detachable receiver to allow a shackle.

I had a swivel recovery eye on the crossmember (rear) which was great.

Jate rings also have their place - but can sometime be out of the way and you should really use them in pairs Mike

I would not recommend bumper d rings unless the only likely recovery is standard towing. jate rings would be better plus a good quality bridle and properly rated bow shackles

as for rear, I have one of the swivel eyes from QT services which is excellent and has toed and snatched many times.

Mike, can I connect jate rings easily at the front? They are likely to be temporary prior to fitting a winch in the next 12 to 24 months.

Sorry for the daft questions!

Yes, depending on whether you have a steering guard and what kind. The popular snowplough type ones can leave no room for jate rings but the standard landrover bar is fine space wise (and better, imo, as it doesnt act like a snowplough in reverse if you have to get pulled backwards out of mud, snow or sand). If its temporary then jate rings would be fine as your winch bumper will no doubt have several recovery points. the only issue really w ith jate rings is that if you end up in deep stuff then its a pain to attached straps or a bridle to them as they are often under water/mud etc but since they ll be a temp solution I think they'd be absolutely fine, not to mention very cheap.

Two JATE rings for the front and a Dixon-Bate 5T for the rear. Bridle to follow!

Thanks for the advice.
