Having spent a while researching UK supply and fit providers of pop-top/ lifting roof conversions for a 110 defender, is anybody able to confirm what I have concluded, i.e. that it appears there are only 3 options i.e.
1) Fibre glass hinged or vertical pop-up types that are not full length and not long enough to sleep an adult (such as: http://www.poptoproofs.co.uk/shop/product-info.php?id=30392 or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162505462918?_tr...BIDX%3AIT) for circa £3000 supply and fit; or 2) Dormobile side hinged fibre-glass roof (such as: http://www.dormobile.co.uk/conversions) for circa £5000 supply and fit; or 3) Alu-cab metal front hinged roof (such as: http://www.neneoverland.co.uk/listings/lan...nversion/) for circa £9,000 supply and fit. Safari Equip do one as well. Scant information on their web site but I spoke to them recently and was informed they still do them.

There other options to the Alucab in Europe but not much in UK. Most of the options are cheaper than AluCab version. If you can do it would recommend a visit to Bad Kissingen but then that is extra spending.

A visit to Bad Kissingen is highly recommended if you are especially interested in overland travels. There is a much wider range of companies there then are involved in the UK. The show also covers the wide range of 4x4 vehicle and parts, also 6 x 6 and 2 wheel travel. Brendan |

Thanks all, I am going with Safari-equip (all being well) as it is not that much more than the Dormobile roof (once bunks etc are all accounted for) as it provides a solid roof I can put things on....

Yes i did and I am very happy with it (along with the service received from Safari Equip, they were great). A few things to note if you are considering the same thing: The roof space is not as roomy as the dormobile once up, if you’re tall and have large feet the hinge end can be a bit tight and it is not as easy to get up and down from as dormobile bunks. Having said that it is great, especially the solid roof and ease of use. I have attached a few pictures of it in action.

Ah, well I’m 5’11 with size 13 feet! But I tend to sleep on my side... have you ever come across an Alu Cab roof? Are they the same? Think the alu cab has a fold down section st the head end also but then you can bnever get out for a pee... I’d rather a double bed than bunks, I still like the wife. The safari equip is much cheaper than the alucab and appears as good. Is the safari equip made from GRP? Do you have any pictures of inside? Thank You for replying. Will |

We have the X-vision-X one but it’s made and fitted in Germany.
There are pros and cons for all modifications but this was the one we went for on price, weight and lower profile compared to the others. it was cheaper even when taking into consideration driving over to Germany and having the work done. The roof is powder coated steel (and can be walked on etc) as opposed to the dormobile roof which is GRP. I’ll see if I have any internal pics. No experience of Alu-cab, looks good but is pricy. Main difference from memory is that the bed platform lifts up with roof whereas the Safari Equip bed platform is made up of 3 sections that if you want to stand up etc need to be stacked at the front i.e. over the front seats.
