Demand decat exhaust + Stage 1 Alive Remap
Good afternoon,

I'm looking at placing an order with Demand engineering for one of their cat shell stainless exhausts with the sports centre silencer and at the same time getting a stage one alive remap. I've spoken with Dan at Demand and he has been fantastically patient answering my questions. My vehicle is a defender 90 2.4 tdci which is completely stock at present, the old exhaust has rusted off and I wanted to replace it with something that will last, the improved driveability from a remap is also quite appealing.

However, I'm unsure what the noise of the exhaust will be, I don't want anything too aggressive sounding whilst driving up and down the quiet country roads where I live. I am told the remap does nothing to the exhaust note, does anybody have a demand exhaust fitted with the central silencer and how do they find it. I wouldn't mind a bit more of a grunt or a small amount of turbo hiss but I don't want it to be too in your face.

I can't comment on the sound on a 2.4, but highly recommend Demand, Dan really knows his stuff and gives great advice! James

Middle box staying or removal?

The middle box will change the sound the most.

I have a straight through with small back box and although it sounds nice ( imho ) and not too loud or unsociable I’m putting the cat back in.

There's a central sports silencer option which is what I'm going to go for, I just wondered how much it moderates the exhaust note and if anyone had a similar setup and how they found it.

The cat on or off makes the biggest difference. A tdci is not very loud even with all the exhaust removed, and just the cat down pipe on.
I assume you aren’t near Demand, so can’t try with/without box.

I have the dummy cat and sports silencer, in the 2.5” and its fantastic quality.
Mine is also the 2.4 on a 110
The sound is nice and rounded when driving normally, it has a nice rasp when accelerating hard and nice subtle whoosh when changing gear, it also has a very nice purr when idling.

Mine has been remapped by BAS, has the air box mod, BAS intercooler and BAS silicone hoses

You will enjoy it but in the unlikely event you don’t it can always be altered

I’ve got a BAS remap and straight through cat back exhaust. At idle and while accelerating it is no louder than when it had both silencers. If you bury your foot it makes a nice racket but that is it. There was a very noticeable change is how smooth the engine was after doing this and it revs much more freely.

The exhaust "counter pressure" is very important for 2 stroke engines. 4-stroke-engines have valves and an exhaust is just counter productive and the silencers & DPF even more

If want a really performative sports car, cut off your exhaust & anything in the line including your EGR

2.4 TDCi Puma decat with straight through exhaust.

Minor sound difference from inside the cabin.
Louder from outside and more throaty, but only really when under load. Under normal driving conditions it's just a bit less 'muted'.
Main difference is the audible 'dump' when the turbo waste gate gives off

Can sound antisocial if you absolutely rag it all the time, but you don't buy a defender to drive it like a sportscar.

Some people say decat will cause the turbo to overspool... I can only comment on my own experience in that this hasn't happened to me in the two years mine has been fitted. Overspool typically points at faulty/dirty turbo vanes.

Well its purchased now, and whilst I've had my adult sensible head on worrying about exhaust tone etc that may change when I get behind the wheel after having it done.

This was my thinking, I presume if I find it too over bearing the old cat could be welded/sleeved onto the stainless front pipe and fitted back in, turning it into a cat-back stainless exhaust.

Like everyone who has experience with Demand, I can only praise them so far.

I just wanted to ask you if you have fitted the Demand De-Cat and the sports center silencer?
How loud is the car now?

I have a 2.4 , 110 with the following mods:
BAS Silicone Hoses
BAS Intercooler
BAS Mapping
Decat
Airbox mod
80mm Intake

I would like to achieve a better sound but im very unsure because of turbo overspool.
I planned to keep the stock rear muffler and replace center section with sports center silencer from demand – but i dont know how loud it is then.

Ist there any chance someone with this setup could drop me a soundfile or movie by whats app?

Hi Don,

I have an Alive stage 1 remap and the Demand de-cat and sports silencer fitted (no rear muffler), I would send through a whats app video of the sound but she's in bits at the moment in the garage.

Like others described when I was considering the exhaust, the exhaust note change is subtle. I had the exhaust fitted first which gave a a very slight change in tone to the exhaust note pretty much regardless of revs, but it does now mean there is a subtle woosh noise when changing gear, especially if the revs are high. After the remap was done the exhaust note was still the same mostly, except in 3/4/5 when you put your foot down there's a much heartier growl comes from the engine.

Overall if you drive in a civilised manor you wouldn't know it had been done, good gear changes and a steady right foot and there is no woosh noise or real change in exhaust note.

Plant your foot down and the woosh noise happens in any gear and the exhaust really roars in 3/4/5.

I'm presuming for the BAS intercooler/hoses you've got a stage 2 remap, I'm unsure how it would sound with that but I would imagine more aggressive.
