I just drive mine, always with respect for the mechanics, but otherwise as fuel consumption is concerned, well.......... IT IS WHAT IT IS.
My Defender is not a Prius, but then again, a Prius is a more than average economical car,...... or is it? Take a look at below comparison, the real action starts at 3'30" into the film. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

So truck is working as well as it ever has most of the time and I'm pretty darn chuffed - under carriage has been all sprayed up and will hopefully last a good few years now before rust is a major issue.
I'm slowly (very slowly) getting the ice installed, anti theft levels being installed and various other things in the pipeline and I'm back onto doing some mpg runs...... After doing a Milton Keynes return and bristol return I'm showing 344 miles on half a tank! (granted half way on the gauge I think means there's less than half a tank left but never run dry so can't say for sure) |

Without running outside I can't say exactly but think I'm on 560 and no light yet.
But of a test this really.... sticking to 50mph on the m5 through the road work and doing 50-55 rest of time and slip streaming lorry's when I can but shows what you can get |

seems to me that diesels need to be worked to keep breathing & working well...
Pains me to think of these defenders shuddering along at 1500rpm in 6th gear! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

2nd 110.....first didn't last too long tho.
This one on 40k miles - 4yrs old in Oct and I would say is hugely better now than when it left the factory for many many reasons.... I'd suggest the only things wrong with it is a slightly noisy rear diff and a possible poor connection within the wiring / dodgy sensor that goes occasional issues....other than that a big Also don't find the def shudders at all at 1500 rpm in top even on incline....if incline is too step it just slows down but doesn't shudder, not till c1000rpm. |

Just been out for a wee drive to put a few extra miles on the clock.....
Bong and orange light at 565.4miles I suspect 600 miles is now just a formality .....and that'll work out to be circa 40mpg Won't be driving like this all the time but just goes to show what is possible driving slowly. |

What would be wrong with that? On LR website it is written that diesel engines work most efficiently between 1200 and 2000 rpm. As long as you drive smoothly on level ground at that 1500 rpm, there should be no shuddering, but just happy purring. On level ground, my Puma happily purrs along in 6th at 60kmh/1200 rpm. And from that point you can accelerate up in 6th without a problem, as long as you do it gently without putting undue strain on the engine. Eric You never actually own a Defender. 600 MILES?!...No way I'd ever achieve that.
400 KILOMETERS would be about as far as I'd want to go,....I don't like the tank getting down too low, & if ya're in the Aussie bush, ya'd always want to make sure you had enough to get to the next fuel,...which could be some distance. Pickles. |

Eric - you're absolutely right.......in my opinion at least. Pickles - horses for courses......a 90 does of course have a considerably small fuel tank and this isn't a practice that I'd want to try if I didn't know how far it was to the next fuel stop but what it does show is that in the right conditions 40 mpg should be possible....after a little 'tickering', and before I managed c37mpg. |

Caterham, the only big difference we have is that I think to also get about 600 or even 650 out of a tank full, ..... but that are KILOMETERS.
In any case my almost 6 year old SVX with 67000KM on the clock never had any real mechanical engine problem, it is the other stuff which occasionally will fail, like recently a 2nd row seat fold down mechanism, or since saturday, the fricking engine bonnet release which has failed. So off to the dealer again tomorrow morning after our long weekend. My wife and kids laugh with me that I have a "seasons ticket" there. Eric You never actually own a Defender. the number of times my eldest daughter has laughed when I've said 'its fixed now' doesn't bear thinking about. had the bonnet release cable go on me (thanks to dealers) - hope you get sorted. youngest daughter gets its and thinks its the best car in the world. - the wife thinks I'm bonkers and thinks its incredibly uncomfortable. |
