United Kingdom 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Stornoway Grey
Intemittent starting problem
Over the weekend for the first time ever my 2007 Puma DC was bolshie starting. I would be very grateful for any advice, or to hear if anyone else has had something similar.

First thing Monday morning, vehicle last used the previous evening and parked outside overnight. Insert key, turn till dash lights come on, wait for heater plug light to extinguish, turn to start position, engine starts, release key, engine runs for perhaps 1 sec, 2 secs at the most then dies, dash light display returns to the one you get when waiting for the heater plugs to heat (ie as though the enigne hasn't started at all).

Wait for heater light to extinguish, start engine again, exactly the same thing happens, runs for 1 perhaps 2 seconds and dies. Repeat the whole procedure five times exactly the same each time. On sixth attempt. waggle the throttle vigorously during the short period when the engine is running, this time it picks up and runs normally.

Before and afterwards nothing like this has happened.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? My gut says it is some kind of fuelling issue, or possibly a ignition/starter switch issue (but if the latter why did pumping the throttle make it run - coincidence perhaps).

No MIL light at any time, no other fault symptoms. I am baffled!

Starting
I had the same problem along with loss of power for a couple of seconds between 2nd and 3 rd gear.
Fixed it by replacing the fuel pressure reg and the sensor in the fuel pump. As a byproduct it transformed the truck. More power, smoother running and better throttle response. Also way better mpg.
