You don't need to drain the main box, it has its own seal.
Its a fiddle of a job and there is a different O ring on each end IIRC, its also a bit disconcerting as the weight of the intermediate gear makes the shaft drop as you're fiddling the shaft back and forth. Also if the hole in the box has gone oval, it will leak again! There were some posts on here about making and sealing a shaped plate across the end of the shaft - might be worth a try! Keith |

I would just take the box off not worth messing about with in place, change the transfer box seal the same time, things nearly out anyway, take the and brake off as one lump and swing it out of the way and your more room on a 110. Transfer box isn’t that heavy. Takes more time doing it in situ than removing the box.

I had also leak from the intermediate shaft, but just changing the O-rings was not enough. The hole in gearbox body was oval so the O-rings were not enough to seal properly. I had to completely disassemble the gearbox, make to oval hole bigger, turn a "ring" from steel and press it in the bigger hole. You can get moddified gearbox body from Ashcroft. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo
