If installed correctly, they won't make a jot of difference. However, installing them does involve drilling holes in the cills, which negates the idea that they're being protected.

Personally not a fan of chequer plate, but it's purely to your own taste. James

And if you fit sliders I'll buy you sills as previous owner put checker plate on mine including the obligatory holes!! Thank god they stopped there

The main idea behind it is function over how it looks, so if you don’t need it there is little point. It has saved mine from damage many a time in places and is nice to polish out if need be. I don’t however like any coated CP or it on a bonnet No Guts, No Glory.
