Talking of emissions, I hate speed bumps too. The smaller ones are better if need be as they slow but don't induce great wear and tear.
But some of them are stupidly big. Looks like we're actively being discriminated on emissions here too: http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/bath-breathes-2021-overview Now, what I'd lie to know is if introduced which I hope it isn't is why ALL vehicles aren't charged.. Then again, in there they do have their own agenda in many ways and I for one don't miss the place! £9 for entering and about £5.60 an hour for parking along with over priced shops I wouldn't miss it! They are doing road improvements around here which will help traffic flow etc but there are still a few places with damn speed bumps. In a few locations traffic lights were not set up correctly with timing and tha would slo hold traffic up, normally me! I assume probably due to the sensors picking up the Defender shape more. I’ve worked with the emergency services a lot and haven’t ever seen or heard of them having the ability to change lights in their favour whilst on the move. However, I’m not saying it’s impossible but I’d certainly be interested to know more about how it works. I have worked with a city council on a special event where they could favour the lights for a pre planned route, but it was a cumbersome process involving typing stuff into a handheld pda as we went along, chap could barely keep up at anything above walking pace. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Read here:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_signal_preemption Couldn’t think for the life of me the name of it now. But as you can see, the devices are only avable to state services. You cannot buy or hire them without strict permission. I’ve known them to be used for oversized HGV convoys to use them but normally out of typical working hours. No April fools here. The majority of sensor activated traffic lights are controlled by induction loops in the road. I think temporary lights these days use microwave technology. Neither will be particularly influenced by the shape of a Defender, though.
As for emergency vehicles, a system for them to trigger lights to green was trailed in Newcastle a couple of years ago but I don't think it's been rolled out widely yet as the cost is prohibitive. To the best of my knowledge it’s only used by necessity and not commonly used every day. WeWillWin🇬🇧🇺🇸

That Wikipedia entry is about US systems rather than the UK. Darren

Yep. We have the tried and tested police motorcyclists who block off all intersecting roads and then by leapfrogging each traffic light controlled junction in teams they ensure the convoy or VIP is whisked along without stopping for lights. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Ah I can’t tell I’m on phone. But they do definitely exist here as well. (Possibly different system all together.) No one knows much about it for the reason they are not a available except to special services.
I’m not going to argue over if, when, where but as I said. As far as I am concerned they do exist. They don’t completely change lights immediately but they will change them ASAP to allow priority. I think it applies to static traffic signals only, but knowledge to this is limited for obvious reasons. I’ve seen it used with police escorts before with oversized HGV loads and escort van. Might be some info online somewhere but I can’t look it up now. Again, might not show up because it’s reserved only for selected services. For example, can you imagine the PM or royalty with a Police escort having to wait at all traffic light. It allows priority, but won’t just switch them. That’s as far as my knowledge goes. Interesting reading here:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/1...in-UK.html They are not ‘new’ though, only specified as such in the article for this purpose. Retained normally for higher echelon state special services. Given the chance of course everyone would want one! 😂 WeWillWin🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Wonder if they will be a standard fitment in the new Defender as they are likely to change from the iconic square shape to a more rounded shape meaning I’m going to have to spend longer at traffic lights, mmmmmm that might just be a deal breaker for me.

Next we’ll be hearing that by flashing your lights at the sensors you can make them change
![]() If the emergency services are on a shout and want to go through a red light then they just do it on blues and twos under a long established and understood practice - no need for any expensive high-tech system. |

I know they do, which is why it’s best to check junctions anyway.
But there you have it they do exist, the purpose or point though remains to be seen really. Main thing I think they just help with is possibly keeping some traffic out of the way, but still not overly popular as cost vs purpose doesn’t achieve much. On a side note, the roads around here have never been in such a state. The council has opted to just blatantly ignore reports now. Even though they have budgets of millions for ridiculous building projects. The saga continues WeWillWin🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
