Many do remove them and there are no major issue with doing so however a couple of points to be aware of:
1. Your brake pads will wear slightly faster, mainly the rear ones. I put the rear mudshields back on for this reason as at one point I was doing a set of pads in 5,000 miles. 2. In heavy surface water conditions (e.g. heavy rain on motorway) your stopping distance will increase as the first push of the pedal is less effective as it clears the water off the discs. My recommendation would be to keep them on if it’s only light greenlaning every now and then. However if doing more serious off roading, in particular that involving deep mud, then take them off as in those conditions they are more of a hinderance. For many years I have been running with rears fitted but no fronts, though I have a set of front ones waiting to go on when I get a chance. |
