They should have let the Defender retire and started a new model range with this. It is the fact that it is called Defender that has us all polarised. Mercedes do not sell a lot of Unimogs per year but they keep it going. The G Wagen does not have massive yearly sales but it is kept going. Mercedes know that they are important to the brand.
Land Rover will spend a huge amount of money per vehicle on advertising. They forget if a proper updated REAL Defender had been kept going like the G Wagen and the Unimog it would have that subliminal effect in peoples heads of doing more for the brand advertising wise than launching this vehicle. People expect a Defender to be different to look at, to drive and well.. to appeal to a special type of person i.e. us oddballs. Sales would not have been massive but as an advertisement for the brand it would have no equal.
When there is a storm and your power goes, when you see a Defender coming up with a team to restore your power, well you cannot buy an image like that. Defender was not and never will be a big volume seller. You accept it for what it is and what it could do for your company. The old Defender will be heavily featured in the background of advertising photos of the new vehicle just to get that subliminal image of Defender into peoples minds when they see the new vehicle.
This might be a fine vehicle but it is not a Defender. They should have called it something else. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

It’s just all a bit too plain, if one went past me the other way on a motorway I’d know it was a Landrover, but wouldn’t know which model. I am a bit relieved to be honest as I didn’t need to wrestle with the decision to buy one, now I don’t have to! Whistle

what is the purpose of the "chequer plate effect" on the side edges of the bonnet?

Everyone wanted it to look like the old Defender. So somebody in the marketing department went "quick, it needs something that looks a bit like chequer plate!"

There is no purpose. Only style.

Take the Defender badge off the bonnet, it could be from any random generic car manufacturer.

Perhaps a Kia or a Daihatsu. Or take off the Defender badge and replace it with Discovery, Range Rover or Freelander, it could just as easily be the 2020 model of any of the Land Rover range.
Bland and generic.

Could be a "released" leak.

I don't know, but just a possibility.

From another forum (AULRO.com), there is talk of the first official photo from LR tomorrow, Aug 28th, along with a video! That should put to rest whether this is at all fake or otherwise modded for the Bond film.

Bulging flares, checker plate, bonnet bulge, winch, hipline, flat windows, sloped roof, circular but modern lights, alpine windows, flat back, rear spare, i wouldn't call that no inspiration, fact wise, there's plenty, we will see at reveal when all angles are shown. Goodwood shots up on the rocks give the best indication of the rear, however it was still camo'd with cladding.

I don't want to be negative, because the finished product will probably be... not too bad.
But to counter your assertions that the above checklist adds up to a Defender, I owned a 1995 110 300tdi.
It had no bulging flares. It had no checkerplate. It had no bonnet bulge. That takes care of the first three. Then...
It had a winch (and so do most serious 4x4s)
It had a hipline (no comment on this one till better photos come out)
It had flat windows and windcreen. Bet this doesn't have a flat windscreen.
It had a sloped roof (the new one seems to have a curved roof)

This will be a great alternative to a Prado, Pajero or 200 Series Cruiser. But surely even the rose coloured glasses have to take a break eventually and you see the missed opportunity here. LR NEED this to work. They are losing money hand over fist. This will not be like the 3rd Gen Range Rover in 2002 which was just sensational. They missed here.

It has a hip seen at goodwood, it has flat windows, it has a sloped down roof, every defender has flares, people that mod put bigger ones on. The previous defender was a terrible seller, this will sell very well imo and improve just above everything on the current defender that needed improving.

and yet i wouldn't buy a gwagon or a jimny, both for different reasons, had a deposit down on the new defender for some time. Landrover was on a loosing train with the current defender sales wise, they just upgraded it to a bullet train, everyone will want a ride Rolling with laughter

It is true that the old Landrover was not a money spinner since the 70's I think.

Whatever it is like, it may not be a good replacement for the Defenders we know and love, but I bet it will sell in fantastic numbers. 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned.

1989 Ninety 200tdi - Love it - Second best car I have ever owned.

1951 80" Series 1 - Love it - Third best car I have ever owned.

Don’t forget that there maybe two or three defender versions in the family and this is the full fat one like full fat Range Rover and lesser or retro ones released later, hopefully!!!
