PCP = Phencyclidine, Phenylcyclohexyl piperidine, aka "angel dust", once used as an animal tranquilizer and embalming fluid, a dissociative anesthetic now banned almost everywhere and a Class A illegal drug.
Explains a lot really ! |

Zed...you are so so right! A really good friend of mine had a position with ICI in their automotive paint division, he told me that Mercedes do exactly the same & that the commercial arm only expects a maximum of 3 years life from Sprinter vans, hence why they are all rust buckets. He said they are painted with little more than undercoat & anyone buying one out of their own money (which he said should be avoided) should opt for metallic as it will at least have a bit more paint & a coat of lacquer. Back to Zed's post...I recently took my Defender into Guy Salmon for a couple of minor warranty jobs & whilst I was waiting I wandered around the shiny new things in the showroom (none of which remotely appealed to me), I got chatting to a salesman in a very tight fitting suit who said the same that none of their customers actually buy a JLR product, they are all either company lease or PCP, he even said that most don't bother even to get the warranty jobs done as its not going to be a long term ownership so it won't be their long term problem! Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains |

DSC - if it were a newer Hippo, twice the power & torque, low range, better ground clearance and articulation it would be fab, I loved our 2 doors!

Keith, the F1 was an honest, decent vehicle at a good price. It sold by the thousand because of that.
Was it ahead of it's time? 20 years later we're likely to get a monocoque body, fully independent suspension and a 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder engine Defender. The Freelander name has been dropped, but the whole range of Landrover vehicles DNA is now closer to the F1 than the last 2016 model year Defenders. |

Don't forget that tne F1 was the first vehicle designed for LR by Gerry McGovern, so it is perhaps no surprise that they are now all evolved F1s.

For all who rant about JLR's past and future business strategies i like to remind them that so far as a Defender owner it actually worked financially well in our favor! Defender was one of the cheapest way to buy into a market where prices in general hardly dropped if not the opposite. Plus having the Premium, Iconic etc tag for free. Yes, the Defender replacement will not suit or please everyone. But it will be interesting to see how many actually buy something else instead down the track. Same for the ones going on about the current RR and RRS range. Forking out your hard earned money speaks louder than words and it is your money which dictates future products. So it actually falls all back to us as consumers. And yes i will buy a new 'Defender'. Not in a rush for the first editions as our latest JLR purchase is less than 6 months old but i can't wait to get one! Excited! m

Looks like they made the right choice on the basic shape. Looks like it’s staying true to the family silhouette. There’s a TON of prosthetics on this mule. There’s a lot hiding underneath. I think there’s going to be retro styling queues. I think the real approach angle is hidden as well. That one has the possibility of hiding a soft top version underneath the rear prosthetics. I’m very optimistic and at this time, I’m looking forward to it! |

I am afraid, JLR missed the point. They are focused to create the "Best4x4...", "most capable" etc. And this is what the real defender wasn't. It was capable enough to carry my 1ton of loading through sand and mud. It was simple enough to be fixed on the trail. And there is enough after-market support to change problematic parts with better engineered, so a problem will not occur any more - thus high customization.
Even if they come up with a complete retro design, it will still miss the point. Because it is not about round headlamps, nor about off-road capability, but function. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR Jeep Wrangler YJ 1990 4.0. Front 78' Dana 60, Rear CUCV 14 bolt |

It's JLR's stated intention to make 100k per annum, so what you ses as a problem is actually their business case for production. |
