Looks like a D3/4 to me. I love the D4, hate the D5 so that's not a bad thing, but I'm not entirely sure how that looks anything like a Defender. At the very least they should be thinking about round headlights, not rectangular. If not, this is what the D5 should have been. Perhaps good for those, like myself, who might have considered a D4 as a proper day-to-day driver, and kept the Def for special occasions. I'm worried this is going down the Land Cruiser route, which looks nothing like the original, unlike the continued development of the Jeep and G-Wagen. We may not all like the current Wrangler or G-Wagen but they have clear, linear DNA from the original. If this LR goes into production looking anything like the photos, it will have nothing that resembles the original, which up to our generation of Defs, JLR managed. I might like it, but it currently looks only like a Defender in name

So do you think it looks like the first concept - DC100?

It's much closer than the Mule, that's for sure. As I mentioned, perhaps it'll suddenly become a lot clearer when the grille and round headlights make an appearance, but for now.... Monsieur Le Grenadier

Land Rover have also said they are going to extend the Discovery range to possibly 6 models, including competitors for cashcow and juke. Without another vehicle to give scale to this it is difficult to determine the size of it. Wheels/tyres look a bit on the small/skinny side and the ground clearance looks woefully inadequate.

Probably and hopefully it will look nothing like this, and they are just throwing off everyone

Interesting... It does just look like a scaled down d3/4 though, not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not a defender in the traditional sense, if it is supposed to be the replacement???
As already said, it may be another addition to the discovery range, or to replace the sport. Watching this space..... Mike |

The fact that it is blatantly labelled "the best 4x4 by far" makes me wonder if it is intentional misdirection. Then again, we may be meant to think that....

Hey guys, go outside, take a long look at your Defender, go on, walk around it, look inside. Now ask yourself what will JLR carry over from yours to the new model - only two things - the name badge on the front and the name badge on the back. That's it, nothing else.
I think as someone else has said it is going to be a highly capable off road vehicle full of technologically advanced engineering and electronics but all of this wizardry is not going to sit on a ladder chassis, it's not going to have bolt on body panels and it's not going to have flat glass windows. It will be a Defender in name only, sad but true. Defender 90XS SW Mini Countryman Cooper S Morgan Plus 8 |

Interesting seeing a picture that one again - you can see that something possibly fairly similar could lie under all that cladding - there appears to be round headlights, the shoulder-line, and there is bound to be a raised part of bonnet (over lower 'wings') under this mis-direction. Roof could be similar to DC100 too. So I'm cautiously optimistic that although it's a D4 somewhere underneath, the body will look much more DC100 (which has grown on me over the years, if for no other reason that it's actually different from the cookie-cutter LR range) - the cladding is intentionally to make it look more Disco-shaped. |
