I was out in my Classic/Original/One-and-only Defender yesterday. Just a bimble to the shops. And i was reflecting on the New Discfender and decided two things. First, that I actually quite like the New Discfender and two that I will be waving at New Discfender drivers.

The reason for the first statement is that the new Discfender is such a tragedy in my eyes, that it can only serve to make our Defenders more special (don’t really care about value, more its ‘worth’); it will be more sought after, more appreciated and in the case of most of us on this forum I would suggest even more ‘loved’. It has not been replaced by something that we would envy, crave, be confused or distracted by, so our vehicles will never become ‘forgotten’ or part of a bygone age. They will in fact become even more respected. That’s a good thing and it’s thanks to McG that this legacy has come to pass. Well done that man. Bow down

As for the second statement, I shall wave because it’s polite to do so, and we Defender drivers are polite and inclusive types. The fact that the New Discfender driver will be confused by this welcoming treatment, undoubtedly envious that we have a ‘real’ Defender and that they have a vehicle that is a Defender only in name, and the fact that these two reactions will make them feel a fraud, will make them squirm and feel wholly uncomfortable in their status as a New Discfender driver, has absolutely nothing to do with it. I think it is as likely to be Discfender woman, to be honest.


Here's a test for Defender owners:

Do you sometimes sit (with an optional cup of tea or coffee) and just look at your Defender?


Will you, or anyone else, do this with the Pretender, once it is no longer new?


All those tests they did.

So I’ve seen the pictures, read the reviews, and watched the videos but not actually seen the car,
overall I can’t say that I’m impressed but maybe I was never going to be, several factors however
just don’t make sense for me.

1. Is it different enough...
The Defender isn’t in my opinion differentiated enough from the rest of the Land Rover line-up.
I know we all tend to start with appearance so without breaking convention, it just looks to me like
a toughened up D4, full of tech, maybe too precious and with a high price tag.

2. Design...
There is still clearly a visual association with the DC100 concept vehicle with a few more ‘classic’ Defender
references designed in, once you think of the new Defender as a Skoda Yeti that has visited the gym once
too often, for me, you can’t see it any other way.

3. Money...
Then there’s the price, at around 40K for a 90 and 45K for a 110 both of which nearly double if you get
carried away with the optional extra’s... this is serious money.

4. The competition...
For the ‘Def- con II’ to be a success, JLR need to be able to sell, at a guess, 10X as many as its predecessor,
so 200K units + a year to get anywhere near Toyota’s dominance of this market. Land Rovers ‘legendary’ reliability
issues will need to have been comprehensively addressed in design, manufacture and pre launch testing to achieve this.
Going forward, if it isn’t right, fix it straight away, don’t keep sending them out into the real world for us to de-bug
and fix our selves.

5. A 'look don’t touch' Defender?...
Maybe I’m wrong but I think the simple, 4x4 base vehicle that lends itself to being ‘tailored’ to specific requirements
by the individual may have been intentionally designed out. No doubt aftermarket shops when they get their hands
on Def – con II will try to do this for those who can pay, but are the days of the plucky amateur who emerges from
their shed to go on an adventure over with Land Rovers new offering?

6. Here’s the big one for me...
When I walk out and get into my Defender, it’s the way it makes me feel that's so important... I love it, for me it truly
represents all the adventures, undertaken by all of its descendants. I fear Def – con II may have now broken this link
with the past, JLR will probably be happy if they pull off a new mini story with this vehicle... believing this is what it
would have been like if we had developed it continuously, (911 like), but for me no, the simplicity of the initial offering
looks to have been lost... so I’ll love the one I’m with. SKIP

@X4SKP - I think you nailed it.

I've tried hard to like the new Defender. Really hard. And until i've seen it in the metal i'll reserve final judgement.

However, it is difficult to argue against your observations. I hope you are wrong and it'll prove itself otherwise.

If it didn't carry the Defender name then you would pass on this car without discussion. The fake plastic checker plate says it all, design over substance. And i also really wanted to like this car, i even had money set aside for the purchase of it, but I am happy to chug along in my 110 and 90. It may be capable, but is it purposeful?

I guess there's a natural pause until the first test drives take place and then we'll hopefully get some real and honest thoughts from the journos. It seems most of them were very careful not to express any opinions over the launch.
