Defender 110 security? What works?
HI
Picking up my 110 2010 TDCI tomorrow and recently added a post on about modifications.
What became apparent was rust prevention and security, then wait a while to live with the vehicle before upgrading anything else. Also that the people on here are knowledgeable and helpful. Thank you all.

So the big question is with the mass of security products out there, what do people use and what works?
Some say upgrade the current alarm by relocating a few bits. Some add security bolts to the doors etc.. some add a full on tracker.
So as defender owners that still have their vehicles, what have you done to keep them? how much did it cost and do you think it was worth it?

Whatever you have, it has to be something you will actually bother to use.

I have to say that where I am, 99% of the time I don't overly stress about theft, but I have gone for security mods for those occasions when I have to leave it somewhere I'm not too happy with, or in an isolated spot for a weekend.

My choices so far are an optimill removable steering wheel boss and their lockable cover for it; and an X-eng pedal lock. Both seem to me to be easy to deploy - and therfore likely to be used.

I also have deadlocks on the 'to fit' list.

Might seem like a lot of effort for someone not stressed about theft.....! But my old waggon has no alarm, no immobiliser, and doorlocks which are barely functional. Donald

Hello

I've had my truck 3 years now and since that time done a few mods.

I now have a tracker (a GiffGaff sim in a tracker I bought outright) only around £40 and £10 sim

Its hidden in the car and if the battery is removed it will last around 3 days on Battery. I can phone the 'car' and a text message comes back with a google map location. Very accurate.

These are the main bits I always use, there area couple of other things but will keep them back....



The above may not stop but it may slow them down or move to another. At home I also have CCTV and always close the gates. We also have gravel drive so quite noisy if walked on and plenty of security cameras.




Don't let the worry of keeping it put you off, I love mine and there are so many mods Smile

Exactly as Donald above, the optimil removable wheel and lock is easy to use as is the X-eng pedal lock. Even if nipping into a local paper shop I will slam the pedal lock closed - it honestly takes about 4 seconds to deploy. I’d much rather come back and find the motor still there and spend another couple of seconds uncovering the pedals than come back to the nightmare that goes with a stolen vehicle. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for but people’s recommendations are a big factor to take into account.

How many people have locking or security bolts on the doors /Binet hinges etc...,
And seen bits about anti theft devices to stop the bible being pinched.
All a bit Alarming. Excuse the pun...

Hi All new to the site ( I was in Disco 3 2005/6 )
I have just got a 2008 110 utilityRegarding security on reciving the 110 the front locks did'nt work and the rear one you could open with a almost any key so i got deadlocks fitted at around £400 rather than new barrels, and an alarm with imobliser and which trigers if the bonnet is lifted as well as sensors and if the battery is disconected it still keeps going at a of cost £300 also a steering lock all this for peace of mind along with the usual stuff ie full service rather than spending money on wheels, and off rd stuff etc that can come later if needed,

I have just fitted the security bolts to the doors ... not to difficult fit - took about 2 hrs (including one ‘difficult bolt to remove),

Look smart and OEM ...!


Have also fitted a tracker with a giffgaff card in so as I can be informed of any tampering or movement of the wagon

I am with the guy who proposed the steering wheel removal. Or a very discreet circuit breaker. Much more efficient and less likely to annoy you or your garge than all these alarms that just will one day immobilize the legit owner.

If you have spent as much time as myself removing stupid alarms that interfere with you factory fitted alarm or other parts of the car electrics you would never want one. Besides, who takes any action if an alarm goes off in town centre?

do something discreet, don't tell anybody but your mechanic / electrician and /or get a dog. Fixing Land Rovers in rural Guanacaste

I would not rely on pin Torx head screws to provide much in the way of security, since pin Torx bits are so common now. Almost every Torx bit set on sale today will fit, which rather makes a mockery of the whole security pinning concept.

It is easy enough to fill the recess in the heads with a difficult-to-remove substance such as filler or silicone.

A standard Torx head with a ball-bearing stuck in the recess provides a much greater degree of security than pin Torx.

dont forget their is a nyloc nut on the other side that spins with the bolt so needs a spanner on - that can only be used when the door is open ...


in my opinion nothing will stop a car being stolen or broken into ... all the security measures just buy time - so this is jut to stop someone lifting things quickly.

Not on the bulkhead and not on the "B" post, unless you have added some other secret tricks.

If someone wants your doors, do you really think that they'll unscrew the hinges before opening the vehicle?

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that pin Torx are a bad idea but I don't thing that they are sufficient on their own. Similarly I don't think that those plate that fit the hinge bolts on the inside of the doors are much use, since as soon as the door is open they are useless. Some security hinges are the same too, once the door is open you can remove them.

Having said that, although you still hear of far too many complete Defenders being stolen, you don't seem to hear of as many door and bonnet thefts as used to be the case.

My doors (at present) have standard Torx heads with ball-bearings fitted (which mean that they can neither be unscrewed nor drilled) and internally all nuts are special security nuts which require a coded tool to remove. It's actually become a major nuisance now I want to replace the hinges, since even now I am a master of removing ball-bearings it still takes special magic and around half and hour to remove each one. It is likely to take me around 8 hours of work just to get the hinges off the bulkhead and "B" posts. Unlike a thief, I want to avoid collateral damage.

Not happy to share what security I've added, let's just say lots and then some more. I've also seen many owners who have done nothing at all - that's just insane!
