England 2009 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
Insurance "Total Loss" Valuation
Sorry if this is a bit long winded but...

As some of you will know I had my Defender 90 SVX Station Wagon 09 plate stolen on the 23rd January 2018.

I'm STILL in dispute with the insurance company over the valuation and wondered if you guys/gals could help?

I'm after £29,000

This is an email i received from the insurance motor engineer -

"I have reviewed the value of your car and on this occasion I am unable to increase our offer above the £26804.00 already offered. To conform with the Financial Ombudsman guidelines, when valuing cars we use the three major motor trade guides and take an average of the two most consistent guide figures, but in your case this has been exceeded as you have been offered the highest of the guide values. The value we use is the retail transacted value, which is the value a comparable car to yours has already been sold for at a retail outlet, this data is input by the motor trade and takes away the opinion of valuing a car using advertised car prices and gauging what discount can be achieved, as all advertised prices are a point of negotiation."

I wrote back asking where he'd got his valuations from and received this email -

"Thank you for your e-mail. The attached document shows the two guides values we produced for your Land Rover, Parkers guide did not produce a value. As advised previously we follow the Financial Ombudsman guidelines to value vehicle and therefore do not use advertised prices as an advertised price is just a point of negotiation the following link is to the Financial Ombudsman."

He'd got the valuations from Glass's and another called CAP (never heard of it).

The insurance company have offered £26,804 and I'm holding out for £29,000 - am I being unreasonable about my value?

This is for a Defender 90 SVX Station Wagon, 09 plate, 49000 miles, Full Land Rover service history, undersealed, and with a limited number of 60 UK vehicles this one was number 60! I know they weren't made in consecutive order but even so a historical car I think.

I'm no fan of insurance companies but £26804 for a 09 plate...I'd snap their hand off! Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

Some people when selling cars expect sometimes unrealistic prices, which they probably never achieve. I personally would be taking the insurance companies offer myself. 2015 HT XS 90

A little known fact is that if your vehicle is a write off or stolen etc, instead of accepting their financial offer you can opt for a replacement vehicle instead, they are obliged to source a similar vehicle to your loss...I once put them to the test with a Mk11 Golf Gti & they were unable to source an identical car so upped the offer.

The advertised prices have little relationship to their idea of 'market value', on FleaBay theres a Wolf like mine for £30k but I bet they wouldn't give me anywhere near that if mine disappeared...then Id invoke the 'please replace it' stance! Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

I know people "over value" there cars, I just didn't want my pants pulling down by the Insurance company.

Did you go for a freelander? My kid doesn't go to rainbows up near yours anymore so I've not seen what you've got. Ray

Bought a Freelander 2 while waiting for the Insurance company to come up with a valuation.

Would of loved a Defender but couldn't risk the thieving scum coming back.
