Possibly but I wouldn't trust them. No Guts, No Glory.

Hello Rad666
I fitted two Streetwise (TK Star) GPS Trackers a year ago, one fitted to the Defender, she already has another Tracker Fitted, and one to our Caravan, also with a Tracker fitted (both I inherited from 1st owners, and have maintained the service). The Streetwise Trackers, to be honest at £45 each were a 'why not see if they're any good' kind of a purchase, and the No Subscription + can be hard wired to a Power Source were the two (for me) good to have features...I wasn't expecting much, maybe a backup at best option, but they (so far) just work. I obtained two new PAYG Sim's from Vodafone (14p cost for me) when the tracker texts me back its position, after I have sent it the 'where are you code' (G123456#) I havn't progressed with the TK Star Tracking APP which allows live tracking (A full Data Sim is required for this as far as I know) and I haven't played around too much with the various options available either. Alert if nudged for example. My thinking is, if you find you vehicle missing, what you would want at that point (and fast) is to know where it is...send the text, and within 10 seconds (typically 2-3 seconds) back comes a google maps link, you click on that and there it is on google maps with its red flag position shown. I check now (just to prove all is OK) once a month, occasionally when left somewhere I send it the 'where are you' text. Accuracy is really good, within a few meters always, I can also tell often which parking bay the Defender is in and which way round she is... I have the Same Tracker hidden in the car powered by the 12v however it has a battery back up for 3 days.
It has a GiffGaff sim, texts come back very quick and as above accurate. It was £35 then the sim was £5 no monthly charge. Works well, little piece of mind I guess. |

Forgive me for being naive, I am not very tekkie when it comes to sim cards etc. My pay-as-you-go phone gives me details of my credit amount. How do you know when your credit has run out the tracker detailed above. Is it just a case of you don't get a reply when you request it's current GPS position. Life is short, so have your pudding first

On GiffGaff, you receive emails. They also notify you if you're about to lose your credit due to lack of use. I just send a text each time they notify me. After 3 years, I'm still on my first £10 credit.

I had a dial up tracker as described above. It was crap, more than once i got in a panic because it reported my cars position as "west java", Manchester, and Bulgaria despite sitting outside.
Tracker have A £125 sale on most items and i'm considering investing in one, anyone here use one? If so could one of you please PM me with a list of installation locations? Nothing dodgy i swear, if i were to purchase one i want to know its not somewhere it could easily be ripped out. I have a TK Star that I use in my works van and run it on a GiffGaff sim card. Using the app is simple and I only have to open the app to locate the vehicle. The main item I have enabled is the vibration alert which although is very sensitive allows me to know immediately if the van is nudged or moved as I would need to know if anyone is trying to break in.

TRACKER is one of the better companies in that they monitor the vehicle (you choose the level). You will have to dig deep into your wallet though, compared with, say SKYTAG, which is popular amongst forum members. TRACKER have the advantage of utilising Vhf transmissions when the Gps might have been blocked. They make reference to police having the necessary tracking equipment in their vehicles, but I believe those resources are not as common these days as they used to be a few years ago.
They seem to insist on their network of agents to fit the unit. In my experience they don't go to the same lengths,as an owner would, in selecting a position and I would imagine most are fitted in similar places. They have a built in back up battery which is not rechargeable. If this battery goes down it will cost you a further £150 to have their engineer call to fit a new unit. |
