Interesting mines going in because the IPOD socket is all crackly and looses speakers intermittently they come and go if you wiggle it, my lead cost £9 from halfords and has gold plated contacts works fine in other car and stereos around the house, other leads also dont work with my Land Rover radio. It does appear the rubber grommet to the right gets in the way but the service guy didnt say anything. Mine also has a marked clock face so that needs changing (apparently this is common) although these are minor niggles I want it perfect.

If they tell me I need a lead for £170 id buy a new radio for much less with better functionality

This is not unusual in a Defender. The socket in the front of the standard head unit is recessed quite a long way into the fron of the panel, and the body of a standard jack plug is too wide to fit the recess. If you use a genuine Apple lead (which has a much smaller diameter body) or an equivalent narrow-bodied connector you will find this less of a problem.

I suspect too that the quality of the receptacle in the head unit is not great, and even with a small jack there are times when a minor "adjustment" of the connector is necessary for a good contact.

I wouldn't pay £170 though, since I suspect that the LR lead will not be any better.

Although it was in 2008 - the LR Ipod lead was a lead from the rear of the head unit to above the px grab handle - where there was a net for your ipod to sit in... Mike

Picked the car back up today they have done nothing with the radio IPOD socket but gave me a copy of a warranty bulletin, that states the Jack must have a head diameter of no more than 8mm to fit in the recess in the radio, Ive filed my Jack down on my lead to 8mm and rightly enough the connection is now perfect,
Bulletin Number
SSM 42787 - Auxiliary Jack Plug damage / sound quality - defender (last modified 11-11-2009)

Interesting, I didn't think there was a connector on the rear for this. Do you know which pins are used?

No idea, sorry, i just remember seeing this rather neat net above the px handle, that kept it totally out of view and the IPOD lead - i even think/thought the SVX had them.

Let me see if i took a photo (i didnt think that i did) Mike
